The 2000s were a decade of US government actors making specific, identifiable decisions that destroyed enormous amounts of human wealth and freedom, and then asking for more power to fix the damage they caused.

Start with the TSA, created by Congress in November 2001. You now live in a country where a federal employee earning $40,000 a year can pat down a seventy-year-old grandmother in a wheelchair before she boards a flight to Boca Raton. The TSA has never once stopped a terrorist attack. Bruce Schneier, no libertarian, called it "security theater" in 2003. The agency now employs over 60,000 people, burns over $8 billion annually, and still fails internal red-team tests at a rate above 70%. Congress built a permanent bureaucratic class out of post-9/11 panic, and that class now exists to perpetuate itself.

Then there's Sarbanes-Oxley, signed by George W. Bush in July 2002. The law added roughly $2.3 million per year in compliance costs for the average public company. Small firms got crushed. IPOs dried up. London and Hong Kong picked up the listings New York lost. What politicians actually did was erect a compliance wall that large corporations with legal departments could absorb and smaller competitors could not. Enron's executives lied and stole. Washington's answer was to make it expensive to run a legitimate business.

The third is the most expensive. The Federal Reserve, under Alan Greenspan, held the federal funds rate at 1% from June 2003 through June 2004, the longest sustained period of near-zero short-term rates since World War II. This did not happen by accident. Greenspan testified, repeatedly, in support of policies subsidizing mortgage debt. Banks, responding rationally to distorted price signals, poured capital into housing. The entire architecture of the 2008 collapse traces back to that rate decision and the regulatory blessing that accompanied it.

Three institutions. Trillions of dollars destroyed. Millions of lives disrupted. Every single one of them asked for a bigger budget afterward.
