There’s one mistake I see brands make so often and it’s quietly killing their creative team.
Strategists have one job that actually moves the needle - making better ads. Yet multiple brands I’ve come across in the last few weeks still have their strats on creator sourcing, creator comms or even admin.
Your strategist is the highest-leverage person on your creative team. Every hour they spend not doing strategy costs you money.
They do not need to be sourcing creators.
They do not need to be communicating with creators.
And they certainly do not need to be dealing with invoices/admin.
None of our strats are even in the group chats with creators - we have a creative co-ordinator in South Africa. She heads up a team of 4 in Asia and ensures that our strats can spend their time on actual strategy.
And as a CMO/founder/creative lead, this is the question you have to ruthlessly ask yourself:
“How can I get my strategists spending as much time on strategy as physically possible?”
If it’s not directly related to them making ads or helping them make better ads, find a way to delegate it.
One thing we did last year once we realised this was run a time audit of all of our strategists and their utilisation rates (i.e. how much of their time they spent making ads).
We found most of our strats were spending way less time on actual strategy than we assumed. Once that was fixed, creative output went up without hiring an extra strategist.
