Amnesty International strongly condemns the arbitrary detention of five men by Nigeria Police Borno state Command for wearing t-shirts with the caption: “Tinubu Must Go” in Maiduguri. Those detained are: Baba Aji Gremami; Mustapha Abba Yemen; Abacha Mohammed Ali; Adam Umar Gubio; and Abdulhamid Mohammed.
Hurriedly remanding them in prison and accusing them bizarrely of: “the intent to cause breach of public peace within West End Roundabout Community Maiduguri” simply for wearing a t-shirt with a message of political dissent is not a crime. Asserting political opposition is part of human rights.
The authorities must immediately release all of those detained and drop any purported plan to put them through a sham trial based on bogus charges. The right to show and express political opinion is not exclusive to only one political party.
Borno state government and the police have increasingly been carrying out repressive arrests and detentions targeting opposition political parties and their supporters.
Authorities in Borno state have resorted to the familiar playbook of using the law to criminalize peaceful dissent and silence opposition.
The government of Babagana Umara Zulum must not engage in cracking down on peaceful dissent and unleashing the punitive power of the state on political opponents. The government must uphold and ensure the rights of everyone to freedom of expression and association and respect the rule of law.

I wholeheartedly condemn the unlawful arrest, humiliation, and detention of these citizens for freely expressing their political opposition to the failed Tinubu regime in Borno State.
I learnt that this cowardly act was engineered by the @OfficialAPCNg Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum @ProfZulum , with the aid of the Nigerian Police. These citizens were subsequently secretly arraigned before a magistrate and remanded in prison.
Those unjustly detained are:
Ba’ana Grema
Mustapha Abba
Abacha Muhammed Ali
Adam Umar Gubio
Abdulhamid Mohammed
The charges against them must be dropped immediately, and all five citizens must be released from this unjust detention.
Political opposition is not a crime. Peaceful expression is not a crime. Nigerians must never be imprisoned simply for opposing those in power.

Five Men Arrested for Wearing ‘Tinubu Must Go’ T-Shirts in Maiduguri
The Borno State Police Command has arrested and charged five men accused of printing and wearing T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go” in Maiduguri.
The suspects were identified as Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21.
According to a First Information Report (FIR) dated September 29, 2026, and issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Maiduguri, the men were accused of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery.
The police alleged that on September 25, the five men conspired to print T-shirts carrying the inscription “Tinubu Must Go” with the intention of causing a breach of public peace around the West End Roundabout community in Maiduguri.
The alleged offences were said to contravene Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code. The officer in charge subsequently directed that the suspects be charged before the Chief Magistrate Court in Maiduguri.
A source also alleged that the arrests followed a directive from Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to the state Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, over the T-shirts.
The suspects were reportedly taken to court and remanded in a correctional facility.
The arrests come amid heightened political activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The specific court proceedings and terms of the remand order had not been established as of the time of the report.
