Pigs can fly and knock out power to an entire village for 10 hours.
In Tongjiang County of Sichuan Province, China, a farmer tried to transport a pig to a slaughterhouse using a drone. The area is mountainous and moving animals by road can be difficult. The farmer therefore attempted a shortcut by lifting the pig through the air.
The plan did not succeed. During an early morning flight on January 24 the rope attached to the drone became tangled in a high voltage power line. The pig remained suspended in midair for hours while the village lost electricity for about 10 hours.
Local power workers arrived to repair the line. Repair costs reached around 10 000 yuan or roughly 1 400 dollars.
Authorities noted that the farmer blamed poor visibility because it was still dark at the time. Police opened an investigation and determined that the farmer was suspected of flying the drone in a no fly zone and overloading it.
The incident is absurd yet it reveals something important about drone use in rural areas. In mountainous regions drones can make difficult transport tasks faster and cheaper. They are already employed for farming deliveries mapping spraying crops and moving supplies through places where roads are slow or unreliable.
This event also shows what can happen when a powerful tool is used without sufficient planning. A drone a pig a rope a power line and one poor flight path were enough to leave an entire village without power.
Pigs can fly now. They should however stay clear of power lines.
