Florida Woman Charged with Hate Crime for Leaving Pork Outside Muslim-Owned Grocery Store.

Christine Fernandez, 61, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, was arrested after surveillance footage allegedly showed her deliberately placing pork products outside a Middle Eastern grocery store owned by a Muslim woman.

Pork is strictly forbidden in Islam, making the act particularly offensive.

When questioned by police, Fernandez admitted to the act but claimed it was meant as a joke:

“It was a joke… Was it poor taste? Yeah. Was it funny? Maybe not to them. It’s just bacon.”

She was charged with harassment or intimidation based on religious or ethnic heritage — a hate crime under Florida law — and later released on a $750 bond.
