Everyone always talking about “talent density” in Silicon Valley when we really should be talking about how 80% of pretzels in America come from a small region of Pennsylvania
@jonlajoiecomedy This is a more penetrating summation of the existential anxiety of modern men than anything gender theory has produced in several decades
@xwanyex You have kids and finally realize that when your parents told you “we don’t care what you do as long as you’re happy and a decent person,” they meant it. Little correlation between high status careers and those goals.
Lot of people saying “just say you liked it” but when you’re someone like Roger Ebert I think that would come across as either sarcastic or like some kind of phony thing to seem down to earth. You have to jump through some hoops to say what you mean when what you mean is unexpected
@MaxEricThiel@aakashgupta There is a higher level of culpability if you were driving drunk. If you kill someone by not noticing them in the blind spot as they’re passing you versus aim a gun at them and pull the trigger, the person is dead either way, but one of these things merits more retribution.
@AnechoicMedia_ I think there might be something to the idea of maintaining discipline over yourself and your habits that correlates to becoming the kind of person who in time ends up making substantially more money. If you’re always going easy route with little stuff, can spill into big stuff
@xwanyex Having your baby with you makes little out of the house tasks so much more enjoyable. Not only getting to show things to the baby, but you know you’re going to have a few friendly convos w other parents or grandparents, who always light up remembering when theirs were babies
@xwanyex The “only deport if they do other crimes” position has a nice kind of middle-ground feel to it, but if made into actual policy it would mean de facto open borders, just with the potential punishment of deportation for a particular class of people
@shagbark_hick A heck of a lot of artists don’t like making art - the long, lonely grind of it without any guarantee that anyone will ever give a shit about it - but really like telling themselves and others that they are an artist, and living in Brooklyn or LA helps facilitate that sense
@avidseries Adopting an ideology that is almost entirely based in awareness (of inequities, injustices, micro aggressions, etc.) allows you to feel both smarter and better than other people without really having to accomplish anything or help anybody.
@xwanyex There’s this attitude like “it’s not their fault they can’t control their impulses! Mental health, addiction, inequity etc.” But even accepting that as true, it’s still *more* unfair to limit *everyone else* to a society built to accommodate maximizing those people’s freedom
