Bottom line: educators must take responsibility for the messages we send, both inadvertently or purposefully. Skill level is not fixed, and we must aim to grow students’ affinity for a subject, regardless of their skill level, by centering it around its relevancy to their lives.
#QTNA: What messages have students received about what it means to be “good at” a subject? What has led them to assess whether they’re “good at” a subject or not? How can educators debunk these harmful stereotypes students have ab what determines their self-efficacy in subjects?
I am always quite intrigued by my students’ responses on their interest inventories. Most students like certain classes if they believe they are “good at” the subject in question, and most do not like certain classes that they don’t believe they’re “good at.”
Y’all look at my former student! Built her first robot at 6 AND talented at basketball! Versatile out here! The Lord blessed me with brilliance in my classroom! #cmonGod Go Jaison! #proudteacher 😍
Start of school reminders: 1. Watch for kids at bus stops. 2. Leave early as traffic will be heavy the first few days. 3. Be patient with bus schedules as it takes a week or more to get the schedules on track. 4. Don’t pass a stopped school bus when warning lights are flashing.
SHS Faculty reported back for PD today, which means we’re ONE WEEK from a school full of students! Enjoy your last week of Summer, Cats. We’re getting ready and can’t wait to see you! #TheBobcatWay @ Seneca High… https://t.co/32C5RzNfbY
If you know me, you know I am always striving for excellence — especially as an educator! I could not be more proud of my students and their willingness to embrace the best versions of themselves no matter their circumstances! #thisiswhyIteach#teacherlife#backtoschool
Happening now: People gathering at Sanderson High for a vigil for Desmond Jenkins. The 18-year old was shot and killed overnight in Raleigh @ABC11_WTVD
As many have heard, the Spartan family lost 2019 graduate Desmond Jenkins last night. His smile, laugh and spirit would light up a room. I will always remember the pride he had and his love for Sanderson. He truly was a great human being. Thank you Dez for all that you taught me.
It breaks our hearts to find out about the death of one of our own, Desmond Jenkins. We will miss your love to compete, your huddle leadership, and your smile. Sincere condolences to Desmond’s family. #CougarforLife🐯#ThankYouDez
It’s both devastating and traumatizing to have to accept the fact that a young man who used to walk in and out of my classroom daily is no longer with us. To Desmond’s family and loved ones, I lift you all up in prayer. To Desmond, you will be missed, and we will never forget. 🙏🏾
Hate waking up to nonsense. Please pray for the family of Desmond Jenkins and #vgcchoops. He was one of our incoming freshman who was murdered last night in Raleigh. Just in disbelief.
“If we want our principals & teachers to take risks & try innovative practices in their classroom, we have to elevate the foundation of what we deem important and foster a culture that supports staff in transformative work.” https://t.co/D9log6qOed Great stuff from @jillmsiler
