🚨New work with @austincdoctor, @SeamusHughes, & @CamCarmichael_ : We examined thousands of pages of court records and reviewed hundreds of terrorism defendants’ dockets to get a better sense of the decision to travel to join ISIS vs. act in the homeland. 🧵
Our research underscores that traveling or staying home is not a fully discrete choice set. Some folks looking to provide material support to the Islamic State have first attempted to travel, been discouraged or otherwise changed their minds, and then decided to attack at home.
Just out — new journal article in Terrorism and Political violence with Callie Vitro, Camden Carmichael, @austincdoctor and me.
With original data on over 250 ISIS-affiliated defendants in the U.S. we quantitatively analyze patterns related to intentions to travel versus remain home and compare trends across pre-, active, and post-caliphate periods

A short thread -- With the announcement of NYPD that they're investigating the Gracie Mansion bomb incident, a reminder that at @NCITE_COE we've been tracking Homegrown: ISIS in U.S. cases for the last decade plus. Some data points:
New article in Global Crime: Our team @austincdoctor@SeamusHughes@CamCarmichael_ analyze original data on over 200 ISIS affiliated defendants in US court cases. We used a mixed-methods design to look at variation in sentencing based on defendant role as a leader or follower.
We found that leaders tend to receive imprisonment sentences over a decade longer than followers, and prosecutors often describe a perpetrator’s leadership role using proportional accountability and deterrence frameworks.
