Excerpts from the Friday Sermon at Masjid Al Haram
Lessons and Reflections from the Story of the Companions of the Cave
Delivered by
His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid
Imam and Khateeb of Masjid Al Haram
25 Rabi’ Al-Akhir 1447 AH
A great and wondrous story is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an, the story of the People of the Cave, which reveals the power of faith and divine protection in times of trial and persecution. It speaks of young men who believed in their Lord amidst a society drowned in disbelief and corruption. Allah granted them steadfastness, honor, and a miraculous refuge. Truly, it is a story filled with wisdom and lessons, inviting reflection and remembrance. It teaches patience, trust in Allah, and courage in standing firm for the truth.
Indeed, the repetition of such stories in the Qur’an and their wondrous details call us to contemplate the greatness of Allah’s power, His mercy, and His ability to rescue the believers in their darkest hours.
The story of the People of the Cave contains lessons of faith, reliance upon Allah, courage, and sincerity in the face of oppression. It shows how steadfastness in truth brings divine protection and miracles. Their story is also a sign for those who reflect upon the temporary nature of this worldly life and the importance of preparing for the Hereafter.
Among the lessons from this story is that it shows the difference between true faith, belief and reliance upon Allah, and mere dependence on material means. It calls to the balance between worldly effort and trust in Allah, between the intellect and revelation, and between physical causes and spiritual reliance.
The youth of the cave are praised for their strong faith and its fruits. Allah said:
“Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.”
Their hearts were firm with faith, strengthened by divine guidance, and filled with tranquility and courage. They turned to the cave seeking Allah’s protection, preferring to flee with their faith rather than surrender it. Allah enveloped them in His mercy, protected them, and caused them to sleep for years as a miraculous sign for later generations.
The story focuses on Tawheed (monotheism), calling to the worship of Allah alone and the rejection of all forms of shirk (idolatry). The youths chose faith over the worldly life, and Allah preserved them and made their story a sign for His power and wisdom.
It also shows that isolation from evil environments is sometimes necessary for faith to survive, but such isolation should be coupled with remembrance, prayer, and sincerity. Allah inspired them to say:
“Our Lord! Grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us right guidance in our affair.”
Another lesson is that these young believers were united upon faith, cooperating and supporting one another. Their companionship was based on sincerity and shared purpose, not worldly interest. Their unity brought them strength and protection. True brotherhood for the sake of Allah is a blessing that strengthens faith and repels weakness.
The story also contains a lesson in moderation, avoiding exaggeration in veneration of the righteous. When the people after them wanted to build a structure over their resting place, Allah condemned such actions as forms of excess.
Finally, the story teaches the importance of remembering Allah’s favors, avoiding pride, and relying upon Allah in all matters. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever seeks refuge in Allah sincerely, Allah will protect him.”
The story of the People of the Cave remains an enduring lesson of faith, courage, and steadfastness, a reminder for every believer that Allah protects those who are sincere to Him, even if the world stands against them.
This sermon concludes with prayers and reminders that these divine stories are not for entertainment but for reflection, guidance, and strengthening of belief in Allah
