BEREA, Ohio (April 22, 2024) – The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has learned that a text message-based scam, known as “smishing,” is fraudulently claiming to represent tolling agencies from across the country. The scammers are requesting payment for unpaid tolls.
The targeted phone numbers seem to be chosen at random and are not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads.
Ohio Turnpike E-ZPass does not request payments by text. Collections of unpaid toll and/or toll violations does not occur by text.
All links associated with Ohio Turnpike E-ZPass will include www.ezpassoh.comand https://t.co/QnhxbQGjUJ.
The FBI, which is aware of the smishing scam impacting several states, recommends individuals who receive the fraudulent messages do the following:
- File a complaint with the IC3, https://t.co/binCYB0W6u, and be sure to include:
- The phone number from where the text originated.
- The website listed within the text.
- Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website.
- Contact the Ohio Turnpike’s E-ZPass customer service center at (440) 971-2222.
- Delete any smishing texts received.
If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
We encourage all customers to stay alert to these types of scams and to contact us at www.ezpassoh.comand https://t.co/QnhxbQGjUJ with any questions about Ohio Turnpike E-ZPass notifications.

Peregrine Falcons Build Nest on Ohio Turnpike Bridge
When repair work began at the Ohio Turnpike’s mainline bridge over Cuyahoga Valley National Park in late April 2023, construction workers were soon greeted by existing residents. Two peregrine falcons, Gypsy (mom) and Trailblazer (dad), built a nest and have since welcomed two offspring. These days, the parents are on high alert defending their offspring by divebombing intruders who get too close to the nest. To maintain a safe working environment for both the workers and falcons, the Ohio Turnpike has shifted the repair work to another section of the bridge. Workers will return to the inhabited section of the bridge when the falcon chicks mature and take flight by the end of June. The Ohio Turnpike maintains more than 530 bridges across the 241-mile toll road in 13 counties. Stay tuned for more photos and updates!
Today, the Ohio Turnpike welcomed in-person and virtual staff from neighboring toll agencies – @PA_Turnpike , @IndianaTollRoad , and @ILTollway – to Peer Roundtable 2023 to discuss ideas, share best practices, and network.
Don’t be a fool this April, drop the distractions & focus on the road. It can wait.
Starting tomorrow (4/4/2023), using a cell phone or other devices while driving is a primary offense. For more info on Ohio’s new law: https://t.co/ezlpkbyccK
