New Jersey is proposing a temporary 3% sales tax surcharge around the Meadowlands during the World Cup.

The current sales tax is 6.625%, so this would push certain purchases in the area to 9.625%.

It would apply to things like taxable goods, prepared food, drinks, and entertainment inside the Meadowlands district.

They’re also proposing a 2.5% hotel surcharge, a 50-cent fee on rideshares going to and from the Meadowlands, and other fees tied to the event.

The goal is to offset the cost of hosting the World Cup, but the obvious issue is that local residents still live there.

People in the area are going to be paying higher prices at restaurants, stores, and local businesses because a global sporting event is coming to their backyard.

They keep saying it’s “temporary,” but every taxpayer knows how that usually goes...
