Fun storyโฆ and a reminder: development isnโt always linear.
When I brought Prep Baseball Utah to the state in Oct 2020, I started calling prospects and emailing HS coaches to explain what PBR wasโand what it could become for Utah baseball.
One of my first calls was to Cam Day (Layton HS). Years earlier, my Brewers associate scout Sam Swenson (Utah Marshalls) had told me about a 15-year-old already nearing 90 mphโand I never forgot the name.
Late 2020 I see Cam touched 94 back east. I call him and ask if heโd had real scout contact or filled out MLB Prospect Link. He said his only interaction was a Rockies scout business card.
So I told him:
If you come to our first Utah event and perform, youโve got a shot at Super 60 (Feb 2021) in front of ~100 MLB scouts.
He showed up. Earned it. Performed again.
Then he put together one of the best HS pitching seasons Utah has seen:
2021 (Layton HS):
11โ1 | 0.46 ERA | 76.1 IP | 133 K | 9 BB
He went to Utah, spent two years in the rotation, and didnโt get drafted out of HS because some scouts thought heโd maxed outโโhe is what he is.โ I disagreed.
After going unselected again in 2023, he worked out for the Dodgers in AZ and lit it up. He called me saying he had two 6-figure+ FA offers and asked: best dev path or best offer?
My answer: take the best offer. Always. He chose the Dodgersโgreat decision.
Two years in, he moves to the bullpen late last summer, adds a four-seam, and it explodes: promotion to AA Tulsa, sitting 96โ98, touching 100 in the Texas League playoffs. Heโs already appeared in MLB spring games, flashing the big FB and a nasty cutter/SL at 90โ91.
Back to Tulsa or up to AAA OKCโฆ either way, donโt be surprised if he gets the call in 2026.
We make a call to the pen as Micah Ashman comes on in relief of Cam Day, who finishes with nine K's
