Explorers feature at European Open Day - Ocean Literacy in Action 'Ocean Literacy Island'

Today is International Women’s Day! It is so great, and quite serendipitous. I say serendipitous because it is so significant that the first #EuropeanOceanDays #OceanLiteracyinAction held in Brussels, happens to be featuring on International Women’s Day.

A panel of women spoke about ocean literacy and skills, highlighting the value of engaging and promoting Ocean Literacy and blue skills.
At the event, Cushla Dromgool-Regan, who has led the Marine Institute’s Explorers Programme for nearly 20 years here in Ireland, is presenting and exhibiting what she and our wonderful Explorers team do - engaging children and teachers in learning about our amazing ocean resource - which is ten times the size of our land area in Ireland!

Cushla is among many other mighty women who play such a key role in leading the Ocean Literacy campaign in Ireland, the EU and the world. Included in the photo is the wonderful Rita Borges from #OceanAzul

Cushla is showcasing some of the amazing work of the Explorers Education Programme. These include projects that schools have completed with the Explorers outreach teams, including the Ocean Champions Awards and the EU Blue Schools certification, as well as the Explorers book ‘Our Ocean – Marine Legends, Fairy Tales and Folklore in Ireland’.

The Marine Legends book is an example of the culmination of one of the wonderful projects that was completed by over 300 primary school children from around the coast of Ireland. Inspired by stories of local legends, mermaids, salmon, swans to giants, battles and magic, the children took part in learning about Ireland’s marine heritage.

Using these stories, the children created truly magnificent poems and works of art that have continued to be shared with others. This project has inspired many others to replicate learning about their marine heritage in schools.

The Explorers Education Programme does such important work in outreach and education, helping to establish Ocean Literacy in the foundational years for Ireland’s young population, developing their blue skills and supporting them in extending it out into local communities.

At the European Ocean Days event, it is fitting that we continue to celebrate our marine heritage in our pursuit of greater ocean literacy on Women's Day. It is also important that we continue to learn more about the influence the ocean has on our lives, and how we also have an influence on our ocean. May all the women involved in ocean literacy continue to influence, communicate and help us make informed decisions about the ocean now and into the future.
