There is a lot of romanticism and martial hagiography written about such fighters. Be it Yemen or Afghanistan.

While in my opinion, there is nothing extraordinary about them.

The reality is this - these men come from societies where there is nothing. Zilch. Nada. There are no aspirations of going to a good school, getting good education, good job, building a nice house, traveling around the world and what not.

In a cruel twist of irony, when you've nothing to live for, dying for an abstract sense of honor and cause becomes the ultimate flex in life. Something which brings honor and name to the family.

Look at the man in this video for example.

In any other society, he would be just a destitute hardly able to make a living. But here he's another foot soldier. Another body. Him fighting will give respect to his family, and his death will bring them honor.

You cannot defeat these people because there is nothing that they have which you can destroy and impose economic cost on them. The traditional definition of victory and defeat doesn't apply to them.

The Russians understood such people because they encountered similar resistance and culture during their campaign in the Caucasus.

This will sound extreme but the only way you are going to defeat these people and impose cost on them is to kill as many of them as possible, be absolutely ruthless and dominate their tribes and societies with brute force.

But here again, the peace and subservience will exist only till the point where your power and threat to the lives exists. Because you won't be able to subdue them.

For long term peace, you again need the Russian model in Chechnya - demonstrate the ability to be equally ruthless, create military superiority, coopt the elite and let them to their devices and way of life while maintaining overall control.
