Celtic’s recruitment has become a serious issue.

I find it absolutely astounding that we signed 10 players during the summer and only two of them started against Rangers at the weekend.

We have constantly been told by those running the club that the aim is to come out of every transfer window stronger than we went into it. But can anyone seriously argue that has happened recently?

The last three transfer windows in particular have left us with effectively the same core group of players we had when Brendan Rodgers returned. Bar one or two positions, we simply haven't improved the starting XI.

And the evidence is staring us in the face. Another transfer window has passed, yet many of the same players we have been crying out to upgrade or provide serious competition for are still starting the biggest games.

Look at Jordan Lotomba and Oliver Sørensen as examples. We bring these players into the club and then, when the biggest domestic game comes around, they're completely excluded from the matchday squad. What does that tell you?

It's beginning to look like a mirror image of previous windows. We get towards the end of the window, panic sets in, and suddenly we're bringing in bodies to fill out the squad rather than players capable of immediately improving the starting XI. The pattern is becoming impossible to ignore.

We're caught in a vicious cycle of signing large numbers of players, only for several of them to quickly fall out of the picture. Then we're left relying on the exact same core group of players that the recruitment was supposedly designed to improve upon in the first place.

And then we have the Celtic board coming out and effectively saying they're backing Martin O'Neill. But what does "backing the manager" actually mean if it's only words? How have they backed him?

If you don't deliver the manager's top targets who fit the way he wants to play, and instead leave him with last-minute loan deals and inexperienced teenagers, in what world is that properly backing your manager?

Backing a manager isn't releasing a statement after three consecutive defeats saying everyone is going to come together and support him.

Backing your manager is giving him the tools to succeed BEFORE the problems arrive.

It's identifying the weaknesses in the squad, getting his priority targets through the door and giving him players capable of immediately improving the starting XI.

Going into derbies and major European matches with little contribution from your new signings raises serious questions about the people responsible for recruitment.

Yes, football is emotional. Supporters will blame managers, tactics, formations and individual players and managers absolutely have to take responsibility for their own decisions and performances.

But time and time again, I don't believe this board has given Celtic managers the tools required to do their jobs to the best of their ability.

For me, the recruitment record over a number of years simply hasn't been good enough. You only need to look at the core of our starting XI over that period. It doesn't change anywhere near enough because too many of the players brought in supposedly to challenge or replace established starters ultimately fail to do so.

At some point, accountability has to go beyond the manager.

I believe this board is holding Celtic back. They may completely disagree with that and genuinely believe their strategy is the correct one, but supporters are entitled to look at the recruitment, the European performances and the continued reliance on the same core players and question where this is heading.

If those running Celtic cannot address these repeated failures, then for the good of the club, I believe they should seriously consider whether it is time for change at boardroom level. Managers come and go but the recruitment problems remain.
