When the state commits violence against its own citizens, when does it face electoral punishment?
My new paper shows that state violence alone isn't enough: victims need independence from political elites to hold perpetrators accountable at the ballot box
The key insight: property rights don't just change economic conditions; they fundamentally reshape political relationships. When citizens gain autonomy from state actors, past state violence becomes electorally costly for perpetrators and their allies.
“Bringing War Back In” is finally out in paperback 📖

For years, Colombia relied on aerial eradication (aircrafts spraying glyphosate over coca fields) to weaken armed groups and reassert state control. Our paper with @JuanFCampos11 and @llschenoni shows this often backfired, igniting more violence instead of reducing it. ✈️💥
The reason? Spraying disrupts the fragile balance between authorities, armed actors, and local communities, creating incentives for violence and undermining the very control it seeks to build.
