VA Linux sold Intel boxes on free software. Anyone could buy the same chips and grab the same OS, so Dell and IBM did. A year post-IPO it was down 96%. A free, copyable edge buys months, not a business.

strncpy, the function everyone called the safe one, was the leak. One call secretly did five jobs. I shipped a fast swap once. It broke more than it fixed.

The kernel team did not send a memo about unsafe strncpy. They deleted it, so any future use fails to build. A memo is a suggestion. Deleting it is the law.

Torvalds answered the SCO scare in 2004 with Signed-off-by, a named person on every patch swearing they wrote it. I have watched audits turn on that same question across 14 compliant platforms. AI now writes nearly half our code and brought it back.
