5 Weird Facts That Shock Me Living in Florida

1. With over 1,350 miles of coastline and more than a billion beach visits per year, shark attacks are ridiculously rare. Watch out for lightning, though.

2. Despite our 23-plus million residents, we also get over 142 million visitors a year (nearly 6 per resident), yet violent crime is still well below the national average.

3. Even more shocking, with all that population + MILLIONS of tourists, our traffic somehow isn’t the absolute worst in America (even if it feels like it). I still hate I-4, though.

4. Florida manages to remain #1 in lowest tuition, while also being 1st in graduation rates and overall higher education, 10 years running. States like California and Illinois could learn a thing or two.

5. Did you know Florida has wild monkeys and parrots? Throw in various pink birds, alligators, panthers, bears, crocs, pythons, and even some green anacondas, and we seriously live in an accidental open-air zoo.

I have a question for you snow birds in Florida, when the speed limit sign says 55 ...and you are driving 35 ...can you not see the sign or do you just not drive in your state and are scared at that speed? TBH I'm irritated and you are holding up traffic everywhere causing accidents, and let me tell you I live near to several collision centers and you people are raking in millions for them.

Dear Sir.. as a Florida Native.. I would like to say that going after Publix may be the single most antii-Florida anyone could do. Just like Beaches, gators and Sunshine, Publix defines who we are.

You write for a rag that daily seeks to belittle Florida and Floridians, and now you want to take shots at Publix? II am not sure what audience you think you are entertaining..

Publix employees more Floridians than any other company in the state. More people that were raised here got their first job from Publix. Department managers make more than some 4 year degrees make. Publix provides the jobs that pay the bills for hundreds of thousands of hard working families across the state. Publix was my first job, and it was my sons.

Publix buys Florida agriculture goods, vegetables, dairy. Publix produces their goods IN Florida, employing more people in second tier manufacturing to bring FLORIDA good to FLORIDA consumers. Farmers survive due to Publix.

After storms, Publix is there. A few years backs when Hurricane Michael hit as a Cat 5 in Panama City.. when the storm passed.. we have hundreds of electrical utility trucks moving down I-10 to help, and right behind them with a Highway Patrol escourt? It was Mother Fucking Publix! in a convoy of semi's ready to help theiir neighbors.. FLORIDIANS, and they didn't ask if you were a customer or not. Trader Joe's didn't show up, Amazon didn't show up.. the Orlando Sentinel didn't show up, except to take pictures they could try to make money off of. After a storm and Publix shows up.. it's like FLORIDA has shown up. Seeing that truck meant the state of Florida hadn't forgotten about you.

We need Publix a hell of a lot more than we will ever need you of the Orlando Sentinel. And if the state want's to give them a tax break due to the MASSIVE revenue they bring into the state and the people they employee? So freaking be it.

Attacking Publix? dude.. thats not a hill you want to die on, but die on it you will.
