Four years ago, I didn't want to be here anymore. Then a feral, pregnant stray named Frances found a hole in my fence.

I made a deal with myself: if she kept showing up for food, I’d keep staying. One night she showed up injured, I brought her inside, and the very next day she gave birth to a litter of kittens live on stream to 500,000 people.
I couldn't bring myself to separate them, so now I’m a single dad to 8 cats (and a crazy tripod pup. But that’s another story)

Taking care of them saved me.
Today, that little hole in the fence has grown into something massive. We host a show called Cool Cat Stuff (https://t.co/QmEDfzAC2V) on @Amazon Live and we’re launching Vet Van Fleet (https://t.co/Aw1QI72rPr) —a nonprofit mission to provide FREE healthcare to cats everywhere and raise awareness for mental health in the vet med industry.

You'll never convince me she isn’t an angel in disguise. Because she absolutely saved me more than I saved her.

If you’re struggling to hold on, maybe try building something bigger than yourself. Oh, and keep your eyes open for that hole in the fence.

Because sometimes being broken is how the love finds its way in.

Meet the Opossum.

Opossums have been getting the butt end of the rumour mill for years. Often regarded as dangerous and disease filled they are nothing if not the opposite.

They are seemingly immune to many things that ail humans and other wildlife including pathogens from dead or decaying animals, snake venom and Lyme disease that can be contracted from tick bites. They actually eat ticks that land on them and a single opossum can eliminate up to 4,000 ticks per week from our landscapes!

An opossum, when confronted with a threat, will often hiss or bare its teeth. Or more likely, run. But if it is surprised by a predator, it will enter a catatonic state. It basically faints and is in a state of unconsciousness. The opossum has no control over this; it’s involuntary. This state can last for hours.

As you can see, Opossums carry their young in their back.

I live in the midst of oak, ash and hawthorn trees and I can attest to their magical nature. I have always been blessed with a natural retreat in every home I ever lived in and for that I am truly grateful.
