TOKEN2049 Singapore 2026 — A Few Takeaways from the Week 🇸🇬
TOKEN2049 returned to Marina Bay Sands on 7–8 October, bringing together one of the largest gatherings in the global crypto and Web3 industry.
According to the organisers, this year’s event was expected to bring together:
• 25,000+ attendees
• 7,000+ companies
• 300+ speakers
• 500+ exhibitors
• 1,000+ side events across TOKEN2049 Week
The scale is impressive. But beyond the crowds, big names and packed schedules, a few things are worth reflecting on.
1️⃣ Institutional finance is becoming a bigger part of the conversation.
One of the most interesting aspects of this year’s programme was the participation of established financial institutions.
Leaders from Franklin Templeton, Nasdaq, and other major financial organisations joined discussions alongside crypto-native companies on tokenisation, institutional liquidity and on-chain settlement.
This doesn’t mean traditional finance has suddenly moved on-chain.
But the conversations are becoming more practical.
How can tokenised assets work within existing financial systems? What needs to change in settlement, custody, compliance and market structure?
These are questions worth paying attention to.
2️⃣ Stablecoins are increasingly being discussed as payment infrastructure.
Stablecoin payments were a prominent topic, including a main-stage discussion involving World Liberty Financial and Mesh.
What interests me most isn’t the number of stablecoins entering the market.
It’s whether they can make cross-border payments, merchant settlement and everyday financial operations genuinely easier.
A faster transfer is useful. But a payment solution also needs reliable settlement, compliance, reconciliation and a good user experience.
That’s where the real work begins.
3️⃣ AI and crypto are finding more reasons to talk to each other.
AI agents, autonomous transactions and the intersection of AI and blockchain featured throughout the programme.
One session was even titled “Agents + Crypto: What’s Real & What’s Cope?”
It’s a fair question.
There’s plenty of excitement around AI agents using blockchain-based payments and financial services. But we’re still early in understanding which applications genuinely need decentralised infrastructure.
The technology is interesting. The business case matters more.
4️⃣ Beyond the main stage, the smaller conversations matter.
TOKEN2049 Week had already taken over much of Singapore before the main conference began.
There were technical discussions, founder gatherings, investor meetings and countless side events happening across the city.
One event that particularly caught my attention was IBM × Optimism’s “Onchain at Scale” on 6 October.
It reflects a question the industry increasingly needs to answer:
How do you take something from a promising concept to a product that can actually be distributed, governed, secured and operated at scale?
To me, this is one of the more interesting changes in the conversation.
💭 A final thought
Crypto is still a noisy industry. There’s no shortage of speculation, ambitious predictions or projects promising to change everything.
And not every new partnership, announcement or pilot will turn into a successful business.
But there’s also a lot of serious work happening behind the scenes.
People are discussing how to build better financial infrastructure, how to connect with existing institutions, and how to make these technologies useful beyond the crypto community.
For markets like Australia, the next challenge is making that innovation work within local regulatory, commercial and customer expectations.
Perhaps that’s what I find most encouraging.
Not that every idea will succeed, but that more of the conversation is moving towards the difficult, practical questions.
There’s still a long way to go.
And that’s exactly why it’s worth paying attention.

From Models to Workflows: AI Is Moving Deeper into Real Business Operations
In the latest wave of AI and enterprise technology updates, the story is no longer just about which model is smarter. What matters increasingly is whether these systems can fit into real workflows, reduce friction, and support day-to-day business operations.
1️⃣ OpenAI — From Conversations to Interactive Workflows
OpenAI’s expanded GPT-6 rollout is one of the clearest examples of this shift. Beyond broader access across ChatGPT user tiers, the more important change is that ChatGPT is moving further from pure conversation toward interactive task execution.
The ability to generate buttons, forms, charts, and usable interface elements points to a future where AI is not only answering questions, but helping structure and carry work forward.
2️⃣ Anthropic — Making Enterprise AI More Affordable
Anthropic’s launch of Claude Haiku 5.5 highlights another key trend: cost discipline is becoming central to enterprise AI adoption.
For many organisations, especially those deploying AI at scale, lower unit costs and practical reliability matter more than headline benchmark performance. That makes high-frequency use cases such as customer support, classification, search, summarisation, and workflow assistance more commercially viable.
3️⃣ SAP Pay — Bringing Stablecoins into Enterprise Finance
In payments and finance, SAP Pay’s integration of USDC into enterprise ERP flows shows that stablecoins are slowly moving beyond the crypto-native world.
The significance here is not simply that a business can pay with a digital asset. The more meaningful development is that stablecoin settlement is beginning to connect with approval chains, accounts payable processes, reconciliation, and treasury workflows.
That is the point where experimentation starts to become infrastructure.
4️⃣ Microsoft — Building the Infrastructure for Enterprise AI
Microsoft’s latest Windows AI architecture points in a similar direction from the infrastructure side.
By positioning Windows as a hybrid AI execution layer, Microsoft is trying to bring local models, cloud models, enterprise controls, and operating system-level permissions into one framework.
For businesses in regulated or security-sensitive environments, this matters because AI adoption is no longer only a model decision. It is also a question of deployment architecture, access control, auditability, and governance.
💡 The Bigger Picture
Taken together, these four developments suggest that the next stage of AI competition will be shaped less by novelty and more by usefulness.
The winners may not simply be those building the most capable models, but those making AI easier to deploy, safer to manage, and more naturally embedded in business systems.

A full day in Singapore yesterday. 🇸🇬
Started with #OKXNOW, hearing how @okx sees the next phase of crypto, payments, investing and AI. Then a private session with global payments leader, followed by an APAC investor gathering to close the day.
Different rooms, different conversations — but a lot of overlap around where finance, technology and global markets are heading.
Good start to the week.

Stablecoins are starting to disappear into the financial infrastructure behind the scenes.
The Coinbase × Citi collaboration is a good example.
Businesses can move between fiat and stablecoins through existing banking and payment rails, without necessarily managing the complexity themselves.
That matters.
Mainstream adoption may not happen because every company decides to "use crypto."
It may happen because payments become faster, settlement becomes more flexible, and cross-border money movement becomes easier — while the blockchain layer stays largely invisible.
The next phase of stablecoin competition may be less about the token itself, and more about:
Banking + Compliance + Settlement + Distribution

AI agents are getting more capable — and that makes the infrastructure around them more important.
NVIDIA’s new Open Agent Safety Platform points to a bigger shift in enterprise AI:
It’s no longer enough to rely on the model to decide what it should or shouldn’t do.
As agents gain access to files, APIs, software and internal systems, enterprises will increasingly need:
Runtime security
🔹Permission controls
🔹Independent monitoring
🔹Human approval
🔹The next phase of enterprise AI won’t just be about smarter models.
It will be about giving agents more autonomy — without losing control.
