“The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.”
The foregoing principle is drawn from Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War, Book V, in the account of the Melian Dialogue. The Athenians argued that justice binds only equals in strength; where power is unequal, necessity governs. Melos refused submission, trusting in distant alliances and the justice of its cause. The city was taken, its men executed, its women and children enslaved. In this exchange Thucydides records the natural order of political life and the cost of refusing to reckon with it.
Nature does not recognize the abstract justice imagined by man, ancient or modern. It yields to the vital force of strength. Power is its law. The stronger establishes order, and from that order arises what men call justice. Where power is unequal, appeals to fairness do not alter necessity.
Weakness is a fact of the natural order, but it is not its measure. It is a condition, not a crown. When incapacity is mistaken for moral authority, judgment fails. When desire is substituted for reality, ruin follows.
Hierarchy precedes politics. It arises from the unequal measure of capacity and will. Master and slave are not inventions of law but expressions of type. The master creates, commands, and gives form. The slave obeys and lives within what has been imposed. This distinction is not created by law. It appears wherever strength encounters limitation.
Truth without strength cannot prevail. Strength alone secures order. Strength is the discipline to see reality as it is and to act in accordance with the necessity it reveals, even when it contradicts desire.
To reject the natural order in favor of one’s wishes is not to preserve peace; it is to invite destruction.
