There are only 236 of them left on Earth. Every single one has a name.
The kākāpō is the world's heaviest parrot - a mossy green, owl-faced bird the size of a small dog that cannot fly, may live to 90 years, and only breeds every 2 to 4 years when New Zealand's rimu trees produce enough fruit to trigger the urge.
Rats. Cats. Stoats. Humans clearing forests. The kākāpō never evolved to outrun any of them.
By 1995, 51 birds remained. Scientists, rangers, and Ngāi Tahu - the Māori people who have always known this bird as taonga, a treasure—evacuated every last one to predator-free islands.
Each bird got a transmitter. Each nest watched around the clock.
This past February 14th, the first kākāpō chick in four years hatched. They named her Tīwhiri. By spring, 59 chicks had been born.
236 birds. Every name known. Every nest watched.
Who's counting down the days until the rimu trees fruit again? 🦜

The blue morpho butterfly's remarkable color is not due to pigmentation but iridescence, with microscopic scales on its wings reflecting light, creating what is known as structural coloration.

We were absolutely floored by the millions of you that watched us make silly water sillouettes on our driveway last summer. We are starting out the summer the only way we know how, and this time it’s all about movies! What else do you want to see? We have a whole summer ahead, a driveway and a hose. The possibilities are endless!!!
Cody Green was just a toddler when he was diagnosed with leukemia. For the next decade, this brave boy from rural Flora, Indiana, fought the disease with unwavering strength and an unbreakable spirit. Throughout his battle, Cody developed a deep admiration for the United States Marine Corps. His courage & character so inspired those around him that the Marines officially named him an Honorary Marine, recognizing that he fought his illness with the same honor & resilience as any warrior.
As Cody’s health began to decline in April 2012, Marine Corps League member Sergeant Mark Dolfini felt called to honor him in a profound way.
On Cody’s final night, Sergeant Dolfini stood guard outside the boy’s hospital room at Riley Hospital for Children in full dress uniform for eight straight hours completely on his own initiative. No orders, no fanfare, just quiet respect & solidarity for a young hero.
Cody passed away the following day at the age of 12. Sergeant Dolfini later attended his funeral, offering continued support to the grieving family.
This powerful act of compassion remains a beautiful reminder of the bond between a courageous child & those who serve, a testament to bravery, respect & the very best of human kindness. ❤️
Tragic loss in South Philly; KiIIers still on the run.
22-year-old Penn State senior Billy Schmidt was kiIIed early Saturday just yards from his home. He was walking back from watching the NBA Finals when two black men tried to rob him for his phone. Billy chased them and one turned and shot him in the chest. He died at the hospital. No arrests yet. Police are seeking tips.
If mainstream media cared, they would help find this young man's kiIIer.
Heartbreaking. Rest in peace, Billy.
Tumbleweeds start out as tiny seedlings; by summer the plant has a round shape. They grow flowers and fruits. By fall they dry and detach from their roots, so they spread their seeds.
The largest children’s hospital in the world - backed by the best legal team money can buy - is fighting tooth and nail against a family’s right to determine the medical care of their child.
If you can, please donate to help the family cover mounting legal and medical expenses.

"Oh come, let’s sit down with them,
but we must be really well-behaved,
so that dear Mary herself thinks
we are also two little angels."
