She saw five specialists in two years.
Gastroenterology. Neurology. Psychiatry.
“Nothing’s wrong.”
“Maybe it’s anxiety.”
“It’s the weed.”
She was throwing up weekly, bloated daily, and missing work.
This isn’t rare.
This is what it looks like when the system fails the complex.
🚨 ED visits for suspected cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) in youth rose 28% per year from 2006–2020.
⚠️ A growing concern among young males with public insurance, esp. in the western U.S.

And I can’t believe CHS (Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome) is a real thing. It’s the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced and I just had pancreatitis in February. Be careful with the weed y’all, I guess mines genetic but others can get it from smoking to much everyday
Not feeling your best after regular cannabis use? There's a condition called Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) that might explain why.

📊 A new @Forbes piece by @EEarlenbaugh explores the heavy toll of Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS)
🧪 85% of CHS sufferers surveyed ended up in the ER
📈 Early onset + heavy use = higher risk

Your high school health teacher told you weed wasn’t addictive. That was wrong.
There’s an epidemic spreading across the country—Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome. In some areas, it accounts for nearly 1% of ER visits. Most patients don’t even realize cannabis is the cause.

"Frequent Cannabis Use Linked to High Disease Burden in CHS"
A new study (internet-survey) highlights the significant healthcare burden of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS)—a syndrome of recurrent nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain—particularly among heavy daily cannabis users and those who start using before age 18. 🤮
Key Findings:
📌 Frequent Use & CHS Risk: 82.2% of participants used cannabis ≥3 times daily, and 41.5% used ≥6 times daily before CHS onset.
-> read that again. 😬
📌 Hospitalization Rates: 84.9% had at least one ER visit, and 44.2% were hospitalized due to CHS.
-> hospitalization = reassurance, care, taking resources; ≠ morgue. 🤔 Know the stats on teens + alcohol?
📌 Early Use & ER Visits: Initiating daily cannabis use before age 18 increased the likelihood of ER visits (OR 1.64)
📌 More CHS Episodes = More Hospitalizations: Higher CHS frequency was linked to greater hospitalization risk (OR 1.52).
Study Details:
🔬 Survey of 1,052 adults (mean age: 33.1 years, 69.1% women) from Facebook & Reddit CHS support groups (May–Sept 2023).
- Anyone want to survey Facebook or Reddit on politics? 😬
📝 Limitations: Self-reported data, no independent CHS verification, and no control group.
Takeaway for Patients & Providers:
🚨 Heavy daily cannabis use—especially starting in adolescence—may increase CHS risks and hospital visits. Clinicians should be aware of this potential burden when counseling patients.

@DrewIsSharing @chipstackscott @DankFiend666x Some people who quit cannabis can get sick. But that's not what that person was saying. He was saying that it's hard to diagnose cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome because cannabis can (in the short term) help those with the condition feel better
Noteworthy to share. I have a pal who was hospitalized with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), a rare condition from smoking (too much?) pot.
Not much is known and I am happy David Krumholtz is talking about it so folks know the signals.
