My wife and I went out to dinner last night, and I’m still a little confused by what happened. 😅🍽️

Our bill was about $70, and we left a $20 tip. In my mind, that seemed more than fair. It wasn’t meant to be cheap or disrespectful — we paid the bill, left what we thought was a good tip, and were ready to go.

But the waiter seemed unhappy and made a comment that if we weren’t willing to tip more, we shouldn’t be dining out.

That honestly surprised me.

A $20 tip on a $70 bill is close to 30%, so I didn’t think we had done anything wrong.

I completely understand that servers work hard, and I know tips are an important part of their income. But when a customer leaves what feels like a generous tip and still gets made to feel like it isn’t enough, it makes the whole tipping conversation feel even more uncomfortable.

Tipping used to feel like a thank-you for good service. Now it sometimes feels like there’s a number people are expected to hit, and anything below that can cause tension.

It feels like everyone is frustrated — customers feel pressured, servers feel undervalued, and the system puts both sides in an awkward position.

So I’m genuinely curious: was $20 on a $70 bill unreasonable, or have tipping expectations changed that much?
