China just restarted military talks with Canada after eight years of silence. Ottawa hasn't said a word about it.

On September 4, the two countries held the 5th China-Canada Defense Coordination Dialogue, the first time that channel has been used since April 2018. Only Beijing announced it, through its Ministry of National Defense. Canada has issued no public statement confirming the meeting happened.

That silence isn't an accident. China controls the entire narrative here: it decides what gets said, when, and how it's framed. Canada gets none of that leverage by staying quiet, but going public risks reopening a fight over Taiwan, the South China Sea, and Chinese coercion that Ottawa has spent the last year trying to quietly move past. The talks also land right as Canada's relationship with Washington is under real strain over trade, timing that hands Beijing a cheap propaganda win it didn't have to lift a finger for.

The dialogue channel died the moment Canada arrested Huawei's CFO in 2018. It's back now because Mark Carney has spent over a year rebuilding ties with Beijing, tariff cuts on canola, resumed flights, a Wang Yi visit, all while Canada still officially lists concerns about Chinese military behavior in the region.
