On Saturday, the Jr. Miners will host cross-island rival the Strait Pirates at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
As of publication time, Membertou was in second place in the Sid Rowe Division, two points ahead of the Pirates who sat in third place.
However, the Pirates played the Eagles on Friday night in Port Hawkesbury, but the score result was not available at publication time. A recap is available online in the local sports section at https://t.co/52bO1tjnzd.
“The game is huge,” said MacKinnon, noting the Jr. Miners didn’t have the start to the season they hoped for, but have turned things around in recent weeks.
“We’re hoping to secure home-ice advantage come playoffs and there’s a good chance we’ll be playing Strait and any game against them is two big points.”
MacKinnon’s not wrong.
In all likelihood, the Antigonish AA Munro Bulldogs will finish first in the Sid Rowe Division, leaving the Jr. Miners, Pirates and Pictou County Scotians battling for second place and the final home playoff spot in the division.
The last meeting between the Jr. Miners and Pirates came on Jan. 5 in Port Hawkesbury with Membertou sneaking out a 6-5 win in overtime, despite leading the game at one point 4-0.
“Any game against the Strait you know is going to be a hard-fought game by both teams,” said MacKinnon, who this season is the Jr. Miners captain. “Hopefully this weekend we’re able to come out on top.”
