Two hundred and fifty years ago, our nation’s founders took an extraordinary step, declaring that liberty and self-government were the birthright of a free people. 

One of the most remarkable stories in human history emerged from that moment. 

For generations, we have carried forward the enduring belief that every person possesses inherent dignity and that freedom is the ingredient needed to unlock human potential. Across our nation, countless men and women have risen from humble beginnings to lives of extraordinary achievement. Our citizens, from every walk of life, have inspired innovation, enterprise, discovery, service, and sacrifice on a scale few could have imagined. 

As we celebrate our 250th anniversary, we honor those who built, defended, and strengthened this nation across the generations. The principles that animated our founding remain as vital today as they were in 1776.

During the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), France played a decisive role in the American victory, especially at the Battle of Yorktown.

The main French figures were:

Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Count of Rochambeau: He commanded the French troops sent to America and worked closely with George Washington.

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette: A young French officer, he supported the American revolutionaries from the beginning of the war and became one of Washington’s closest allies.

François Joseph Paul, Count de Grasse: He commanded the French fleet that won the Battle of the Chesapeake. This victory prevented the British from sending reinforcements to Yorktown.

In October 1781, the American and French armies surrounded the British forces led by General Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown.
Thanks to the French naval blockade and the joint French-American attack, Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781.
This defeat marked the end of the war and led to the recognition of American independence in the Treaty of Paris (1783).
