Another Japan story.
I had a long layover at the Tokyo airport on my way back to the US. At the lounge, I used their very clean ( equipped with bidet ) toilet. Perhaps because of the busy-ness of the place, I got distracted and didn’t realize that I had left my backpack which contained my passport and some valuables inside the stall. With my heart pounding, I immediately ran back to the restroom as soon as I realized that ( within 2 minutes of leaving the restroom ), and wasn’t surprised that my backpack was no longer there. I asked around and no one knew but a woman suggested asking one of the servers in the lounge. The young server motioned me to follow her to the front desk. Before she finished telling the staff at the desk what happened I already spotted my backpack sitting on top of the counter. It was turned in by another passenger. I breathed a sigh of relief and whispered words of gratitude for the honesty of the Japanese.
As much as I want to keep hating the Japanese for killing my grandfather during World War II, I couldn’t. It was brutal and depraved how they executed my grandfather. They buried him alive after torturing him and his men. They had them dig their graves and buried them except their heads. All of them died.
My grandfather was an educator. He was the superintendent of an entire provincial school system. During the war, the country was occupied by the Japanese. He was the leader of a small resistance group ( guerilla group ) in their town. My grandfather was not even 40 when he was murdered by the Japanese.

I admire and like the Japanese in spite of this tragedy that has left an enduring deep and palpable emotional scar on my family.

An atheist liberal comedian said something about Islam twelve years ago that millions of Christians still aren’t allowed to say out loud today.

In October 2014, HBO host Bill Maher — not a conservative, not a Christian — made a statement on live television that drew immediate backlash and went viral again this week. Maher said of Islam: “It’s the only religion that acts like the mafia — that will kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book.” He made the remarks in response to radical Islamic violence — specifically referencing the pattern of assassinations, fatwas, and mob killings that have followed criticism of Islam across the world. Author Salman Rushdie spent a decade in hiding after a fatwa was issued calling for his death over a novel. Cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo in Paris were massacred in their offices in 2015. A Swedish-Danish activist was murdered last year after burning a Quran in protest. Across Europe, governments are now debating whether Quran burnings should be criminalized as hate speech — while church burnings receive no such attention.

Maher does not share the Christian faith. He has mocked it publicly for decades. Yet on this specific point, he said what many believers think but self-censor out of fear of social consequences.

The irony is that the very freedom that allows Maher to criticize any religion without fear of death is a product of the Christian West’s long development of free speech, rule of law, and human dignity.

He's an Indian national who arrived in April and is already the loudest critic of the Pentagon on social media.

"They have attacked scores of small boats in the Pacific and the Caribbean. They've killed dozens of people in a campaign that is, by most accounts, quite illegal and contrary to international law."

That's Shashank Joshi, @shashj . Defence editor turned bureau chief. Two months in the country and he's already built a 16-year paper trail calling American power "malevolent," "predatory," and "quite illegal" — while sitting on the advisory board of a UK think tank funded by the European Commission, BAE Systems, and the US State Department.

And he's now lecturing our military leadership on what it means to take the oath.
