During World War II, drag shows gained popularity among troops from the United States and Britain as a means of stress relief. It provided them with a way to temporarily escape the hardships of war. However, a unique incident occurred when a British unit hosting a drag show came under attack. In an extraordinary turn of events, these soldiers found themselves fighting while still dressed in drag. The government attempted to conceal these photographs from the public for many years, likely due to concerns about the unconventional and unexpected nature of the situation.
The technology we know as Bluetooth derives its name from Harald Bluetooth, a Viking king who passed away over a millennium ago. Just as he united factions of Denmark and Norway, Bluetooth technology unifies various electronic devices. The Bluetooth logo cleverly incorporates his initials, represented by the runic symbols for Hagall (*) and Bjarkan (B).
The origins of Harald Bluetooth's nickname remain a subject of debate. Some sources suggest that his fondness for blueberries resulted in permanently blue-stained teeth. Others speculate that he had a dark blue/grey-colored tooth, possibly due to decay.
Around 1865, an Egyptian street vendor was captured in a photograph while selling mummies.
During the 1800s, the mummy sale business in Egypt was a booming trade, fueled by the Western world's fascination with ancient Egypt and its artifacts.
Egyptomania, or the obsession with all things Egyptian, had a significant impact on European culture, art, and fashion. The growing interest in Egyptology led many wealthy Europeans and Americans to collect Egyptian antiquities, including mummies, as exotic curiosities and status symbols.
As a result, a thriving black market for mummies and other ancient artifacts emerged in Egypt. Locals would rob tombs and sell the mummies to eager collectors. Often, mummies were also ground into powder and sold as "mummia," a substance believed to have medicinal properties.
The mummy sale business was so lucrative that sometimes fake mummies were created to meet demand.
Divorce by combat, the medieval way of ending a marriage
In medieval Germany, husbands and wives could settle their disputes through marital duels. The man fought with one arm tied behind his back in a hole, while the woman wore weighted clothing and used a sack filled with rocks as her weapon. If they couldn't resolve their differences peacefully, they would engage in the duel. The consequences were severe: the husband would be beheaded if he lost, and the wife would be buried alive.
