Federal policies implemented in 2021 led to notable progress in the fight against poverty, but data show that persistent economic disparities, by gender, race, and ethnicity will only be closed through permanent investments.👇 (1/7)

Thank you so much for participating in our "Let’s Talk About It" chat. Please continue to follow us and @CAPPoverty for future Twitter chats and ways to push policymakers to reduce administrative burdens that disproportionately impact disabled people. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet
A7: There are policy recs in our @CLASP_DC report on advancing disability equity for people with Long COVID in #SNAP & #TANF. Congress should remove work requirements, remove CDR requirements, & increase funding for local navigators. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet https://t.co/Fufi7KFLWu
A7: President Biden’s executive order on customer experience with the govt is a great start to reducing these burdens. Disabled Americans deserve access to the basic supports they need to function in the modern world. More below. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet https://t.co/6uWZnBvJ1L
@CAPDisability A4: Policymakers may be influenced by harmful stereotypes and narratives about disabled people. They may see disabled people as "fakers" or "burdens" on society, leading to policies that serve to weed out what policymakers think are undeserving applicants. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet
A6: There is no one-size-fits-all solution to administrative burdens, but one excellent change is for federal agencies to coordinate and create a universal federal application process among safety net programs. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet https://t.co/6uWZnBvJ1L
A5: The safety net is a vital part of the American economy. Reducing administrative burdens will ensure more people can meet their basic needs while also building a stronger, more inclusive economy for all. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet
A4: Many state governments, as well as the Biden administration have done a lot of work to address these issues. But there is much more to be done, read more below. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet https://t.co/6uWZnBe7Db
A3: Exactly. Administrative burdens can make folks feel disempowered and stigmatized when applying for benefits. By forcing benefit applicants to jump through so many hurdles, it implies a lack of trust in the person and an assumption of wrong doing. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet
A3: To quote one of the individuals interviewed in our report: “It feels like they’re treating you as if you’re trying to rip them off. Like, the default is they don’t trust you.” #SimplifyTheSafetyNet https://t.co/6uWZnBvJ1L
@CAPDisability A2: America’s SS disability programs use one of the strictest definitions of disability in the developed world & are notoriously difficult to apply for, due to complex forms & a multi-step disability determination process that leaves many lost in red tape. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet
A2: One example is SSI having “asset tests,” which require participants to keep their resources below a threshold to receive benefits. Disabled people are forced to limit their savings to get aid, trapping them in poverty. #SimplifyTheSafetyNet https://t.co/6uWZnBvJ1L
