You’re arguing against a position nobody is taking.
I never said Persia should replace Iran. I said Persia remains a legitimate historical and cultural name for the same civilization.
The world uses exonyms for countless countries: Germany, Greece, Egypt, China, Japan, India. None of those are the exact names used by their inhabitants, yet nobody claims they are “incorrect.”
Likewise, Iran is the modern official name of the state, while Persia remains a historical and cultural name recognized worldwide. That’s why we still say Persian Gulf, Persian literature, Persian architecture, Persian rugs, and the Persian Empire.
The existence of the indigenous name Iran does not somehow invalidate the historical name Persia. Both names have centuries of legitimacy behind them.
The real question isn’t whether Iran is correct—it is. The question is why some people are so determined to erase the word Persia from a civilization that has been known by both names for centuries.
Thank you for proving my point. We have now moved from “Persia is wrong” to “Persia is an old exonym that I personally don’t think should be used.”
Nobody claims the Greeks renamed Iran. The reality is that both names have existed for centuries. Even the 1935 request to foreign governments to use “Iran” was necessary precisely because the world had long known the country as Persia.
Languages are full of exonyms. Germany is not called Germany by Germans. Japan is not called Japan by Japanese. Greece is not called Greece by Greeks. Yet nobody argues those names are “incorrect.”
Persia is not a mistake that needs correcting. It is a historical and cultural name associated with one of the world’s oldest civilizations. That’s why we still say Persian Gulf, Persian literature, Persian architecture, Persian carpets, and Persian culture.
Iran is the modern official state name. Persia is the historic international and cultural name. Both are legitimate. Calling someone a troll doesn’t change that.
Nobody is claiming that Persia and Iran originated as the same word. The point is that while Persia originally came from Pars (Fars Province), it became the internationally recognized name for the entire Iranian state and civilization for over 2,000 years. If Persia only referred to one province, then why do historians speak of the Persian Empire, Persian Wars, Persian Gulf, Persian literature, and Persian civilization when discussing territories far beyond Fars?
By your logic, we should stop saying Germany because Germans call their country Deutschland. Exonyms exist. Persia was the accepted international name of Iran for centuries and remains a fundamental part of its cultural and historical identity. That’s why the world still says Persian Gulf, Persian language, Persian rugs, Persian cats, and Persian culture.
Iran is the native name, Persia is the historic international name. Both are legitimate names referring to the same nation in different contexts. You don’t erase 2,500 years of history simply by insisting that only one name is acceptable.
@ItsMeMTJohnson@uscfan981 Thanks for sending the stats. Very similar. Except Larryvstayed with one team his entire career while LeBron has been a window shopper his whole careers should have just stayed with Cleveland and maybe we would consider him higher
Calling Dr. J over LeBron “full retard” is a good way to announce you started watching basketball after 2005. Dr. J won MVPs in two leagues, changed how the game was played, and inspired an entire generation of stars. Before LeBron, before Jordan, Dr. J was the player kids wanted to imitate. He dominated both the ABA and NBA, won 4 MVPs, 3 championships, scored over 30,000 professional points, and helped make above-the-rim basketball mainstream. Lenron is a beast ; he has longevity and the scoring title ; but LeBron lost the title when he started shopping around like a window shopper. He should have stayed with Cleveland his entire career. He’s one of the greatest but will never be considered the greatest
@ShapurBozorg So you must call the Persian gulf the Iranian Gulf as well? You can never erase Persia from Iran. The more you try the stronger the desire will get among the Iranian population
I understand that “Persia” was originally a Greek exonym and that “Iran” is the historical endonym used by Iranians for centuries. But I don’t see the two as mutually exclusive. “Iran” is the country’s official name, while “Persia” remains a widely recognized historical and cultural name associated with Persian civilization, literature, art, and heritage. Even the Iranian government later permitted both terms to be used interchangeably in many contexts. I personally like the name Persia and think both names have a place.
Top 20- great player - first few years straight out of Africa/Coming to America- couldn’t dribble the ball worth shit - always needed an additional dominant player (Sampson, Drexel, etc) to ever accomplish - only won because Jordan retired and chased baseball during those years - top 20 and I’m being nice
If you mean Shaquille O’Neal, he was famously one of the worst free-throw shooters among all-time great NBA players.
Career numbers:
* Free-throw percentage: 52.7%
* Made: 5,935
* Attempted: 11,252
For comparison:
* Average NBA free-throw percentage is usually around 75–80%.
* Elite shooters are often 85–90%+.
Because of his struggles, teams sometimes intentionally fouled him, a strategy nicknamed “Hack-a-Shaq.” The idea was that sending him to the line was often better than letting him score near the basket.
@ItsMeMTJohnson@uscfan981 Larry Bird was more dominant. LeBron longevity , most points , yes 4 rings and Larry had 3 but… Bird from 84-86 was more dominant than any year of LeBron’s career. Only Magic could fuck with Larry during those years. And yes Magic was better than LeBron too
