First, A Big Thanks to all of you, who have participated in this important discussion through more than 1400, mostly well written intelligent and informed comments! Amazing!
Second, Note, how this single tweet has created a huge debate in hundreds of places, blogs & and chat boards, amongst Pakistanis, across the world - and has produced a verdict!
What is the verdict? Verdict is that Pakistanis have grown wiser & smarter and you can no longer fool them through mantras of national interest and security! They can judge for themselves! And unfortunately for the Army High Command they don’t trust Generals anymore! They will like to see written guarantees and concrete results - things happening and changing on the ground! Empty promises. rhetorical appeals to national security don’t impress people any more! Most have quickly seen through that, behind all this drama bazi ڈرامہ بازی is Gen.Asim Munir’s desire of legitimacy till November 2027!
While on WhatsApp Groups, people have been chatting furiously, often blaming each other, in the end they have decided to frame a “Charter of Demands” for Generals - which will test if Generals are serious and sincere!
Now since details are out! The senior officer whom I referred (as described by those who interacted with him) as polite, courteous and patient was Pakistan’s DG ISI. But the interaction with him was only three hours - not 15 as some friends are suggesting!
Is this Dialogue going forward? Looks Difficult! Unless the Army High Command realizes its mistakes of the past three years, shows remorse through its actions and starts a series of Confidence Building Measures!
While a lot was demanded of Pakistani Americans in the name of national interest; one wonders: Why Army Chief, Gen. Asim Munir is not ready to retire, in larger national interest, at the end of his legal term? In November 2025?

Pakistan Army High Command, at the highest level, has initiated a dialogue, with several Associations of Pakistani Americans. According to the participants of this Dialogue, top ranking officers were polite, courteous and patiently listened to the opposing points of view - though they insisted that Imran Khan has also done many mistakes! They also admitted that Imran Khan is the most popular national leader!
Army High Command communicated that given the deteriorating situation of Baluchistan and KP, they want to reduce tensions in national politics, heal wounds and forge national unity through a process of political engagement that can lead to release of prisoners including Imran Khan within 30-35 days.
Pakistani Americans have welcomed this initiative, but made it clear that they can’t make any decisions without wider consultations on what’s being told. Army High Command wants Pakistani Americans to tone down, reduce engagement with Congress & give breathing space to Army HQ for taking decisions!
Pakistani Americans welcome this initiative but they are also confused; they wonder if this could be a trap? A time buying strategy? because no positive optics are visible, if anything crackdown against media & political workers intensified over the last few days?
Analysis: While we should all welcome, such an initiative! It’s important for Army High Command to take a series of small Confidence Building Measures to reduce tensions and increase trust. To begin with they should release all recently arrested journalists & their family members (Waheed Murad, Farhan Malik, Haider Saeed & Brothers of Ahmad Noorani & others) and political activists like Mahrung Baloch & other members of Baloch Yakjehti Committee before Eid. Pakistan today is passing through one of its darkest phases, where there is a complete collapse of law and order and brute force is being used unabated to destroy the very foundations of democracy, constitution, and rule of law.
Judiciary is being enslaved with the executive being given powers well beyond its constitutional entitlement, thus gravely impacting the structure of trichotomy of power.

Nobody is safe from the fascism prevalent today: legislators, their businesses, their properties, their families, even women and children are under assault. Azam Swati, Khawaja Shiraz, Intizar Panjotha have all been abducted and tortured. All established redlines have been fractured with total disregard for human rights.

In the wake of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the silence of the legal fraternity is disturbing. Today, the situation is much worse than ever before in the past. Judiciary’s independence has been brutally assaulted, and judges turned into dispensable commodities. This must be resisted with the full vigour and faith by the legal community as, otherwise, they will forever remain buried under the unwieldy weight of oppression and tyranny.

The criminal mafias that have been illegally hoisted in positions of power have their properties, businesses and families abroad. They come back only to unleash a reign of plunder to fly off to their safe havens, waiting for their next turn.

They were defeated in the February 8 elections, but the results were stolen in the darkness of night. This blighted night has continued to get darker with the passage of time.

I have been subjected to solitary confinement and torture in a dark cell by those who control Adiala. My Lahore house was raided when my wife was alone. My sisters and other relatives have been mercilessly targeted. I have not been allowed to speak to my children and denied all rights that the constitution grants me.

With the establishment in command, the distance between the armed forces and the people is widening. Army being an indispensable public asset must be responsive to the will of the people. We can’t afford to sacrifice the reputation of the institution to satiate the lust for power of an individual or a coterie of a few. That would be tragic as it would cause irreparable damage to the reputation of the institution.

Our struggle is not against the institution of the military. We are fighting for democracy, independence of judiciary and restoration of the Constitution. The fight is for the rights of the people. We are fighting for confining institutional operations within the domain of the Constitution. We are fighting for restoring people their freedoms so that they could lead Pakistan to become a formidable country.

No outside force will help us. We must do it ourselves. We must regain our freedom, our dignity and self-respect. Loss of these values renders' human life meaningless. What we do now will determine the future of Pakistan and that of its coming generations.

This can be done only if the stolen mandate of February 8 is restored to the people of Pakistan and those whom they selected as their leaders. The governments installed on the basis of a stolen mandate are lack legitimacy and relevance. They cannot provide the country the leadership it desperately needs to tide over unprecedented difficult times.

It is time for people to step out to reclaim their mandate. PTI is the largest political party of the country. We have the people’s trust. We must not fail them. This is the time to launch a peaceful movement for the restoration of the Constitution, democracy and rule of law. I call upon all segments of the society to play their role. I especially urge my ticketholders to join the movement.
