If we are going add residential density, more of this specially added housing could be universal, and could serve to provide housing options to keep seniors in their communities.
Our colleague, Olav Rand Bringa, has been a primary catalyst for universal design adoption in Norway for over 15 years. In this first in a series of articles about their experience, Mr. Bringa explores UD in a way finding context. https://t.co/3lfmkJPYdL #universaldesign
@DrUrbanPolicy To your attentiveness point: some of access/UD design addresses our tendency towards inattentiveness. Warning strips at platform edges, bells at cross walks, limited protrusions into paths of travel. Are we getting worse? maybe
Some adaptation is actually OK. Less so in public settings, obviously. But in residential where we spend a lot of time, mainstream marketable UD homes have to be high function, but can't be built with the custom accessibility features that can be easily added later.
Its feasibility lies in the second part of its definition: "design that's usable by all people, **to the greatest extent possible,** without the need for adaptation or specialized design.”
The challenge is to figure out what’s functionally possible within contextual constraints.
According to a study from NZ, cited by the World Health Organization, it is approximately 22 times more cost-efficient to build housing that includes key accessibility features than it is to retrofit when an unplanned need arises.
22x! 😮

@theUDproject I use a modified definition of UD that allows for modest adaptation. This is especially applicable to residential where customization is unavoidable and highly desirable. We advocate building new UD homes that allow for easy adaptations.
