or tenancy agreements. A change of ownership does not automatically cancel rent that has already been paid or extinguish the tenant's right to occupy for the period paid for.
Your brother has a claim.
A landlord is generally free to sell a property. However, selling a house does not usually wipe out an existing tenancy agreement overnight. In many cases, the buyer takes the property subject to the rights that tenants already have under their leases
My brother paid ₦750,000 rent in January.
By June, the landlord announced he had sold the house and everyone must leave within one month.
He wasn't even talking about refunding the remaining months people had already paid for.
The landlord just dropped the news and that was it.
When the tenants started asking questions, the landlord said the sale was "beyond his control." He said the new owner had his own plans for the property.
The new owner also said that whatever agreement existed between the tenants and the former landlord was not his problem.
Now the tenants have three weeks to find new apartments, pay new agents, and move out. Some of them who are thinking of suing are even already discouraged by the money and time it will take.
