Can Labour address both the climate crisis and economic stagnation? What resistance might their plans face?

[seeking investors]: so we've invented a machine that dilutes all of human creative endeavour, so that, someday soon, nothing will have the capacity to provoke wonder; that we hope will render every task futile and joyless; and the good news is, we also expect it to kill us all
Sanchez's wager is that Spain has more to gain from adapting to the new geography of global economic power than it does from clinging to the old Atlantic order. Ceuta, however, is a reminder that such a wager is fraught with danger.

I wrote a critical review of Timothy Mitchell's fascinating and frustrating new book: The Alibi of Capital.
There's no paywall, which I'm really pleased about!
@MacaesBruno@KuperSimon it’s a very high profile game and there’s enough mitigation for VAR not to deem not giving a *red* clear and obvious error. It should have been a yellow but VAR can’t intervene on that.
@MacaesBruno@KuperSimon This is a completely different incident to the one that prompted the original tweet (which, need I remind you, *did* result in a red card - which was kinda the whole point of the original tweet). This one *could* have been a red on a very strict interpretation of the law but…
Very odd stat. Since the start of 22-23 season, both City and Arsenal have played 152 league games. City have 329 points (2.16/game), Arsenal have 332 points (2.18/game). Not sure what point they're trying to make with this cut off date of November '22.
@joolsd@ibroxmassive@LukasMukasPukas The Beckham red is one of my earliest football memories, I even still supported England back then lol. I hadn't realised until recently (or had forgotten) how close the ref was to it! Not much chance of him missing that in real time. Which is to say, don't make it so obvious!
@ibroxmassive@joolsd@LukasMukasPukas Secondly, if Enzo had headbutted Anderson with the ball nowhere near either of them, I imagine he would have been sent off, 2nd minute or not! However, the incidents are totally different. I agree it should have been a yellow and *could* have been a red in different circumstances
@ibroxmassive@joolsd@LukasMukasPukas Well, first of all, I didn't make the claim that violent conduct gets a pass in big games. I said if it had been in the 88th minute of the game, rather than the 2nd, it might have cleared the bar. No ref in their right mind is going to give that so early in such a big game.
@ibroxmassive@joolsd@LukasMukasPukas Again, I just don't see it. It *might* have cleared the "clear and obvious" bar in a group game, or in the 88th minute, but not so early in a WC semi final. Which is to say it has less to do with the colour of the shirt, more the occasion.
@joolsd@LukasMukasPukas Compare him to Mbappe, who does even less defensive work in general (though may have done more in this tournament). He also provided "moments" but within a much more dominant team, albeit with its own flaws that were also exposed by Spain
@joolsd@LukasMukasPukas “moments” (key role in comebacks vs Egypt and England) that got Argentina over the line despite their wider flaws. He almost did it in the final, too, with the ball in behind to Simeone. In the 32 team format he might have still just had enough in the tank for the final, alas…
@ibroxmassive@joolsd@LukasMukasPukas Which begs the question of whether he'd have been able to do it if England had tried to press home their advantage rather than retreating. We'll never know that, but he still had to deliver - and I don't see that Argentina team turning it around without him.
@ibroxmassive@joolsd@LukasMukasPukas I'll assume you're saying you think Enzo should have been sent off for the elbow on Anderson... I just don't see it. A yellow would have been fair and, yes, would have conditioned the rest of the game, but I don't think you can blame that for how England reacted after they scored
@MacaesBruno@KuperSimon 1) No way is it a straight red. 2) What difference does it make, really, if it’s a second yellow anyway? If anything, the first yellow was very soft, regardless of what you think of other decisions in this/other games
@AaronBastani@RPMComo As Simon Kuper has commented elsewhere, that might be because there are non-English players in those English clubs… not so in the England team. Not sure I fully buy it but there’s definitely a difference between club and int’l level that’s relevant to talk about
