Concerned that the Wolfe Island Ferry Operates as a Public Service Worthy of 14.7 million Ontario Citizens. Particularly those who live on Wolfe Island.
Thrilled to see stories about the Wolfe Island ferry recognized with a @caj award last night.
Worth noting: in 3 years of coverage, MTO has never agreed to an interview with me. All of these stories were based on info only uncovered through FOIs. https://t.co/5QoQdh5hAc
Consider MTO's Incompetence Regarding Construction of the Kingston Ferry Dock
Construction Began;
1990 Days / 66 Months Ago
Original Completion Date was;
27 Months Ago
Today;
-Buildings are Closed to the Public
-One Berth is Partially Complete
-The Other Unchanged Since 2020.
The electrical issue that sidelined the Wolfe Islander IV around Christmas knocked out both rear thrusters, leaving the ferry with half its intended power & steering as it carried passengers to shore.
Still no word on when it will return to service #ygk

MTO Managers Don’t Acknowledge the Failure of the Ferry Service
But it Can Be Quantified
Just Count Specific Terms, Like "Off Schedule," on MTO’s Twitter Account @WolfeIslander3, During 2025
It's Clear; Ferry Service is Completely Unreliable & Life-Altering for Wolfe Islanders
Hard to Fathom How Unreliable Wolfe Islander IV was in 2025
In-Service Just 141 Days - 38.6% of the Year
Since Starting August 17, ‘24
WI4 was Operational 246 Days - 49% of the Time
Islanders/Taxpayers Aren't Complaining About WI4
They are Stating the Facts of a Failed Project
@waterkeepermark There is no longer an operable bubble system Kingston/Dawson Point. MTO stopped maintaining it
MTO doesn’t have an on call ice breaking tug like in the early years of WI3
WI4 is unreliable. A stoppage would quickly close the open water channel in the ice
Again, MTO has No Plan
Merry Christmas to All
Particularly to the Community on Wolfe Island
Let’s Hope Santa’s sleigh was made in Canada, not Romania and is powered by Reindeer, not Electricity.
MTO Ignored Islanders Input
Instead Selected Grandiose, Flawed & Untested; Ferry, Dredging, Dock Design
MTO Should Have Simply Read & Implemented Their More Accurate 1994 Study Which;
- Rejected Foreign Ferries
- Cautioned About Shallow Village Bay
- Recommended Lengthening WI3
@theshipwatcher@WolfeIslander3@ONtransport Well Said
Real Professional Mariners Look Out for Each Other Maritime History is Replete with Examples.
Unfortunately the Marine Managers of the Ministry of Transportation for Ontario Have Failed to Look After the Residents of Wolfe Island
Perhaps MTO's Communication Strategy Has Taken A 180 Degree Turn
Or, More Likely
Some Wolfe Islanders Have Commandeered the Marysville Dock Sign
Sadly, Social Media Remains the Most Reliable and Up to Date Form of Information About the Status of the Wolfe Island Ferry Service
For $5 Fee - Request Access To:
- Captains End of Shift Report
- Vessels Logbook
- TSB Marine Incident Report
- Video from Marysville Terminal
- Data from Electronic Chart Display and Information System & Voyage Data Recorder
Regarding Wolfe Islander IV on Dec 21 & 22, 2025
It Looks Like the MTO Has Implemented a New Communication Strategy, Based On Recent Experiences, for the Electronic Dock Signs at the Wolfe Island Ferry Service.
MTO Managers Suffer from the Three "i"s"
Incompetence / Indifference / Insanity
This Letter from August Illustrates;
They are Incompetent at Service Operation
Are Indifferent to the Inconveniences and Hazards Endured by Islanders
And Repeat the Same Errors Over and Over Again
What Goes On with a “Crew Shortage?”
Most Involve Officers: Captain,Mate,Engineer
Officers Hold Required Marine Licences
Vessels Have “Standing Orders”
Written Duties for Officers & Crew
Officers/Crew Must Read/Sign/Follow Standing Orders
Outlines Procedures for Crew Absences
Crew Changeover is 7:00 am&pm
Transport Canada states WI4 Needs 4 Deckhands
MTO Typically Staff 6/8
So, An Officer Left Work Today
Sick? Emergency? Shopping?
Commercial Ships, Trains, Planes, Subways In Ontario
Don’t Shutdown Due to Crew Shortages
Only MTO - Wolfe Island Ferry
Excuse me @fordnation and @PrabSarkaria but do you understand the term “vital?” The @ONtransport ferry service outage is more than a disruption of a “vital” service. Your offices continue to strand people and cut them off. More than 30hrs without ferry service is not acceptable!
How is the acceptable @tedhsu? @ONtransport continues to put people at risk and inconvenienced based on the mismanagement of this ferry since the day it was ordered. Voices need to get louder in Parliament. Medical personnel need to be put back on the island at a minimum.

MTO Didn’t Retrieve/Analyze Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) or Electronic Chart Display Information Systems Unit (ECDIS) After WI4 Grounded
Why Not?
Managers Didn’t Know They Existed
MTO On Shore Marine Managers Do Not Have Marine Industry Experience or Professional Marine Licences
MTO: Managerial Incompetence
227 Days MTO in Romania with Shipbuilder
-Ferry is Underpowered
1043 Days for MTO to Train Crew
-Falsely Blame Crew for Grounding
30 Days MTO Fails to Secure Grounding Data
-MTO Report is Absent Crucial Support/Evidence
MTO Again Refuses Comment
Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation failed to retrieve “crucial” data for accident investigators after the Wolfe Islander IV hit bottom, preventing a full review of the crash that tore a hole in the ferry’s hull. #ygk https://t.co/y5Ylh7uwY6
