#OTD 1927, a gust of wind pushed the airship USS Los Angeles into an almost vertical position as it was moored to a mast at NAS Lakehurst. The crew tried to right the airship by climbing the keel towards the tail before it settled back down with only minor damage and no injuries.

In August 1865, Jourdon Anderson, a freedman living in Dayton, OH, addressed a letter to his former enslaver, Col. Patrick H. Anderson, in Tennessee. He wrote in response to a request from Patrick to return to work on the farm where he was enslaved just a year prior. ����

#OTD 1945, USS Barb "sank" a train when a landing party went ashore at Karafuto, Japan, and planted the sub's scuttling charges on a track. As the party returned to the sub, the explosives detonated and wrecked a train. A silhouette of a train was added to the Barb's battle flag.

CWO4 Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams, the last living World War II Medal of Honor recipient, passed away early this morning, June 29, 2022. Woody received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions at Iwo Jima.

When the plane landed, Brown remarked to a crewman that it was the fifth time he’d flown on a bombing mission. The crewman noted that, were he not a civilian, this fifth flight would have qualified him to wear the Air Medal. 2/end

On this day in 1944, Joe E. Brown performed for troops near the Italian front at Monte Cassino. Brown kept performing in Italy for a few weeks, and was invited to join an air crew in a bombing mission over German artillery. 1/
