With the national debt at a mind-bending $40+ trillion, Washington has already spent roughly $530 billion in interest payments for FY2026. That works out to over $22 billion every week — just to service the debt. In sobering contrast, the Department of Defense had a budget of only $461 billion for that same period.

Over the past six months, in other words, we’ve spent roughly $70 billion more on debt interest than on national defense. Forgive us for sounding like a broken record, but our national debt is slowly — or maybe not so slowly — killing us. It’s a message that bears repeating until lawmakers finally take action to steer our ship of state away from the iceberg.

Last week my bill, the Northeast Lobstermen Protection Act, passed the House in a bipartisan vote.

The legislation extends to 2035 a moratorium on new North Atlantic right whale regulations for lobstermen — and prevents these onerous regulations from eroding a way of life on Maine’s coast.

Years in the making, this is a major win for Maine lobstermen.
