@SANTANABURNER7 Unbelievably cruel. You obviously don't have to think she's attractive or whatever, but that took real courage and you're a total twat acting like this. Hope she knows she could do far better than you!
@dichromark@sendburgerss@piotrowski_mi@FateSailor To be fair I don't think him calling her freaky Nikki relates to that, but rather is a show of how little he trusts himself. His instincts are correct in thinking it's a terrible idea and doesn't really want to do it, but follows Ian's advice anyway cause he's so self-doubting
@tyrannapus@dichromark@Occulence@mikromangorine Oh it's absolutely not a great move on his part (although my less than popular take is that he's not exactly enthusiastically consenting to it), but I think many people are applying knowledge we and Bear learn later to moralise an earlier situation
@tomwesleyson@Tomaswept This is so interesting to me since I was just having a chat with someone a few days ago about how Bear being such a normal, highly relatable flawed person is part of what makes the film work so well

^the first in a series of posts she's written about the film, which I think tackle it in a far more thoughtful way than many have been
@ChapinDomino Ahh yes, I've read Sam's review previously! I agree with her on the film failing to be a certain type of movie, but we differ in that I actually think it's all the better and more interesting because it isn't that type of movie haha. Would highly recommend @LauraRbnsn's writings!
@ChapinDomino intentionally controlling/abusive - but I do think it works perfectly at showing how destructive and deteriorating obsession of another can be
@ChapinDomino but they also are pursuing more truly fulfilling endeavours in writing and art school. I don't think Bear's characterisation really fits for the social critiques most want this movie to be - he's fearful and self-doubting and passive rather than (...cont again)
@ChapinDomino Was the montage after? I saw it almost two weeks back so I could be wrong but I thought it was prior. If not then yeah, you're absolutely right. I do think fear (and a lack of inner strength/self-belief) is the primary driving factor behind almost all of Bear's behaviour though!
@ChapinDomino@pakson2012@Poisonoushobo@bakedndtoasted@punishednuz Completely agree that he's more attracted to the idea of Nikki - infatuated with a girl who was kind to him, pretty common for a guy as lonely as Bear seems to be. I actually felt like his attraction to wish-Nikki began to be replaced by fear by the date's end however!
@ChapinDomino@pakson2012@Poisonoushobo@bakedndtoasted@punishednuz It's a complicated one for me because real-Nikki's experience is undeniably one of rape (or at the very least equivalent to rape), but Bear can't know she doesn't consent since wish-Nikki does and he doesn't yet understand that those are effectively two distinct entities
@MacabreMacaw@LauraRbnsn Yesssss. I see Bear as someone who is completely crippled by fear and it, alongside a lack of inner strength/self-belief, drives practically all of his actions. I think back to how he initially turns down her asking him to come to trivia on the phone, lacking the courage to -
@LauraRbnsn Nikki's writing, Sarah with art school - despite both of them also desiring love. I don't think Bear is necessarily obsessed with Nikki at the start (yet), but I think Wish Nikki can serve as a projection to Bear of what he could become if he doesn't start to desire things -
