Franchise films like Star Wars are 2 hour toy commercials and, long term investments. It’s a billion dollar franchise here, guys. Studios profit off theater ticket sales but that is the least amount that contributes to a film’s success.
Theatrical Box Office is usually about 50% (Disney demands more) but we also have Home Entertainment, Sales/rentals of physical discs, digital downloads, and VOD. It all adds up.
Streaming & TV Rights: Licensing to streaming services, broadcast, and cable. For Disney, this includes their own Disney+ (which also drives subscriptions)
Ancillary Revenue, Theme park attractions, sponsorships, product placement, music/soundtrack sales, and international distribution deals.
