I just published analysis of US power plant CO2 emissions from the Climate TRACE consortium, co-founded former VP Al Gore. We estimate that 96% of the US emissions are underestimated by an average of 50%. paper: https://t.co/PMusseTvo7. press release: https://t.co/DfduimWUOg
National Academy report on "Greenhouse Gas Emissions Information for Decision Making" will be publicly released tomorrow. Kudos to the excellent 10 person committee and amazing NAS staff on the effort. Public webinar on October 4, 2022 can be found here: https://t.co/IwM3Z1Xgo7
US greenhouse gas emissions decline during COVID lockdown 3x greater than previously reported. New reliable, real-time emissions estimate system to inform, correct public policy as nation takes on new reduction targets. https://t.co/kr1X5OzFeM
@eroston@ICLEI_USA See the response to ICLEI's complaints about our study. They have grossly misunderstood the science. Our rebuttal is here: https://t.co/BeaT2utapu
@ICLEI_USA@AnuRamaswami@AnuRamaswami misses the point. The goal was not to match all #urbanpolicy levers (though many do match). but to quantify biases on fundamental aspects of urban self-reported inventories. If Scope 1 is biased, 2 and 3 will likely be as well.
@ICLEI_USA As described in our study, the challenge is not the protocols (which are excellent). The challenge is methodological interpretation, data and validation/verification. #Vulcan_v_ICLEI
I do want to see the inventory process changed. However, the protocols are good.... consistent application, finding data and quality-checking are probably the largest problems.
I hope this paper can serve as an invitation to refine the GHG inventory process.
Cities are leaders in these efforts to measure, set goals & hold themselves accountable to those goals.
Let's not lose sight of that just b/c the protocol they've been asked to follow is imperfect
