if u wanna get fancy with dialogue tags bc that brings u joy, go for it! also, the above advice is *editing* advice, not *drafting* advice. pls do not acutely scrutinize ur word choice when drafting!!

- said is invisible; it’s a dialogue tag that blends in
- if ur deploying synonyms to reduce ur “said” count, that might indicate an over-reliance on dialogue tags, so rather than just swapping the verb, consider rewriting as an action tag or internalization

I’m not here to police anybody’s writing but unfortunately I spent 4 years getting a degree that Drilled into my head that you should almost always use “said” unless how they say it is of Utmost Importance and I discovered I genuinely do like it way times better doing it that way

bonus thoughts: it can be worthwhile to audit whether your Special dialogue tag verb (whispered, muttered, shouted, etc.) is compensating for something lacking in the dialogue itself
