Me after applying to 42 jobs in 2 months:
1 rejection email
4 "We'll get back to you"
37 companies practicing mindfulness in silence
0 interviews
1 unpaid internship as a motivational speaker to myself
And a lot of people aren't reaching the 70k floor.
The NLNG/Agip salaries are real but that door is tiny.
Degree, network, and timing. If you miss any one and you're not getting in
Two completely different economies just⦠coexisting
Some Nigerian companies pay fresh graduates over β¦18 million a
year. At firms like NLNG and Agip, an entry-level graduate can start on packages north of β¦18 million annually.
Their first job out of school. Meanwhile the national minimum wage is β¦70,000 a month. About β¦840,000 a year.
Same country. Same currency. A 20x gap between the floor and the graduate ceiling.
The application: 45 minutes long
The assessment: 3 stages
The salary: "competitive"
The feedback: nonexistent π
In 2026, applying is just one part of getting hired.
Visibility, networking, and positioning yourself are the other half of the equation.
One of my mentees just lost her job, and I feel obliged to share this here.

Yet some people still ask: βWhat has Africa achieved?β π
Happy Africa Day. #africaday

Write down every win since you started.
Find out your market rate.
Then say this:
"Based on what I have delivered, I would love to revisit my compensation."
Staying quiet will not make it fair. It will just make it permanent. π
