STORYTIME:
I started watching f1 because of max and for a long long time literally only cared about him. I didn't watch live races back then but kept up with the standings and the news. I really wanted max to win his 5th.
At the same time, I would always notice that everyone on my timeline (33s) hated the guts of this one driver named lando norris. He was max's rival but all I heard about him was people calling him things I won't repeat here.
And then he won the WDC and everyone lost their minds. He was called weak, he was called fake, he was called pathetic, he was called fraud of the century, etc.
Something about me is that I cannot actually hate someone unless I am educated about them and hate them for good reasons. So to understand and possibly join my family (33s), I decided to do some research about this lando norris guy.
At the end of my research.....I fell in love with him 😬. I learned that not only was he a great driver but also an amazing person. As someone in the mental health field and someone who have been watching most sportsmen be all "idc, I'm ruthless, emotion is weakness" for years, I was so surprised and impressed by his vulnerability. He was kind, he admitted his mistakes, he said stupid things, he expressed his emotions. I noticed that he only celebrated when he was proud of himself, he had such low-self esteem when it came to his performance and always criticised himself.
He was just so so very human that I was taken aback. He was also very fast and always pushed himself, was so smart about his decisions, was loyal to his core, was so respectful of his rivals, was so loved on the grid even by his very competition. I watched max talk about him and oscar talk about him. I watched george and charles and alex and lewis and carlos talk about him. I watched him around the rookies. I watched him around the retired legends. I learned about his brand. I watched his streams. He made self-depreciating jokes, he was proudly affectionate with his friends, he apologised publicly, he cried on camera, he was so full of life and color, and he was also the goddamn world champion.
He was in no way perfect, oh he was far from it, and that's what made me realise that someone like this is who I wished I looked up to growing up.
I went looking for reasons to hate lando and came out of it a fan.
I still love max very very much and I've learned about and started to love a couple other drivers.
But Lando Norris you have a special place in my heart and I am so very proud of you.
