NEW: 88-year-old veteran receives $1.7M check after internet users raised money to help him retire from his job at a Michigan supermarket.

Ed Bambas was forced to come out of retirement after his former employer eliminated his pension and his wife died.

“Once my wife died, I didn't have enough income to pay for [my home] or all the other bills I had accumulated because of my wife's illness,” Bambas explained.

Strangers donated nearly $2M to Bambas after Australian social media influencer Sam Weidenhofer shared Bambas’ story online.

Weidenhofer first heard about Bambas thanks to someone in his comments section and decided to set out to find him.

“Thank you ... I wish my wife were here, but it's something that dreams are made out of,” Bambas said.
