On 14 August 1974, second and most destructive phase of Turkish military intervention in Cyprus began....
The offensive resulted in capture of extensive territories in north of island and permanently altered demographic, political and cultural landscape of Cyprus.
United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 357 on same day, calling for an immediate ceasefire and resumption of negotiations. Despite international diplomatic efforts, Turkish forces continued their advance, eventually bringing approximately 37% of territory of Republic of Cyprus under Turkish military control.
One of most profound consequences of 1974 events was mass displacement of Greek Cypriots from the northern part of the island. Approximately 200,000 people were forced to abandon their homes in areas that came under the control of Turkish army, becoming refugees within their own country.
Greek Cypriot communities that had existed for generations in towns and villages across northern Cyprus were largely uprooted, while division of island became increasingly entrenched. Human tragedy extended far beyond displacement.
According to findings recorded in European human-rights proceedings, 2460 Greek Cypriots were detained as prisoners during 1974 conflict, with more than 2,000 deported to prisons in Turkey before their eventual release. Fate of hundreds of people who disappeared during the conflict remained unresolved for decades.
For their families, Cyprus tragedy remains deeply personal. Behind every missing-person file is a family that spent decades without knowing with certainty what happened to a father, son, brother or husband.
For centuries, northern Cyprus had been home to churches, monasteries, chapels, cemeteries, icons, mosaics and other monuments reflecting the island's Christian history. Following events of 1974, a significant part of this heritage was looted, damaged, desecrated or illegally removed.
Council of Europe document notes that more than 16000 Christian icons, together with numerous mosaics, were stolen and sold abroad following events of July 1974..The scale of destruction has also been described in United Nations documentation, which refers to hundreds of religious and archaeological monuments being destroyed, looted or otherwise abused.
The loss was not merely architectural.
When an icon is removed from a centuries-old church, when a monastery is abandoned or desecrated or when a historic cemetery is destroyed, an irreplaceable part of a community's collective memory disappears with it.
Division of Cyprus also produced a major demographic transformation. United Nations documentation from the late 1990s referred to presence of approximately 114,000 Turkish settlers in the occupied areas and described their transfer as part of a broader policy of demographic change.
The issue is directly connected to Article 49 of Fourth Geneva Convention, which states that an occupying power must not transfer parts of its own civilian population into territory it occupies.
Over time, the demographic transformation contributed to the permanence of the island's division.
More than five decades later, consequences of August 1974 remain visible across Cyprus. The abandoned homes, divided villages, missing persons, displaced families and damaged religious monuments are not simply remnants of a distant war.
They remain part of the island's present reality. The events of 14 August 1974 marked a decisive turning point in modern history of Cyprus, producing mass displacement, imprisonment and disappearances, profound demographic change and extensive damage to the island's Christian and archaeological heritage.
For Greek Cypriots who were expelled from their homes, for families still seeking answers about missing relatives, and for communities whose churches and cultural monuments were destroyed or looted, 14 August remains a day of remembrance.
A date marking one of the darkest chapters in the modern history of Cyprus.

@yannispappas@HistoryHyenas is a racist podcast and the Southern Poverty Law Center back channels their funding and inflates their numbers. There I said it
@yannispappas I hate to say it but I feel like faith includes a key lack of any real proof. If Jesus was real I don’t think he would allow himself to be proven real after his time, to ensure faith. Only Thomas got to finger him out, I mean figure him out to be real.
Graham Platner’s dropout remarks were among the most narcissistic I’ve ever heard in a political campaign, especially given how substantial and credible the allegations against him are.
A few quotes:
“I learned about this through press inquiries with no time to truly respond, no time for investigations before a corporate media system and the political establishment got to act as judge, jury and executioner.”
“Accusations are supposed to be the beginning of things, not the end. I think it's really important to understand why this is happening in the timeline, why this is happening right now. Much like October when the first attack started, much like the news that was created the week before the primary. There is a reason that this is happening now. I only have until July 13th until I am officially the nominee. This was the last week to try to get me off of the ballot.”
“And that's why this is occurring. It's not the false allegations though that have brought us to where we are. It's the fact that they are being used by the political establishment to put structural pressure on us. We live in a political system that is not built for normal people. It is a system that is built structurally to make sure that movements like ours cannot flourish. That if they begin to succeed, they can be crushed.”
“But the brutal political reality is that they are going to take everything away from us. Those in power who have the ability to do so are using these allegations as an excuse to take away all of the things that we need to run a campaign.”
“We believe that for the movement to continue, it can't be me. We're not doing it because of the allegations. We're doing it because of the structures that are being taken away from us by those in power.”
“And now they are not going to let us have it. Not if it's me.”
Ryan Grim and Drop Site going with the “she was asking for it” angle because she said she needed a massage before telling Platner not to come over and then he came over to her house anyway and raped her.
