I do think it’s heartening that lots of Brits are standing up against ableism here but it does also suck that the other 364 days of the year are spent screeching about how the disabled are parasitic leeches stealing taxpayer money due to benefits schemes.
What happened to nuance? No one’s even saying don’t be offended, but far too many people are making it seem like it was intentional, malicious and are being wilfully ableist and hard-headed in this situation. You lot are supposed to be far more intelligent than that.
trying really hard to just ignore this tourette’s discourse mostly because i cant believe what im reading from alleged adults capable of critical thinking and nuance
it’s completely normal and valid to be offended and hurt by someone’s tics, but to call for them to be segregated from society, physically assaulted, and muzzled when in public is text book ableism.
@THEROYALKOURT you think a disabled man with an involuntary condition planned to say a slur and cause huge upset at one of the biggest nights of his career? he’s already said he’s ashamed of the incident
@THEROYALKOURT this is like saying that someone with epilepsy must at least somewhat want to have a seizure in order to have one. there was no intent behind it, his neurological condition is by definition involuntary
