NEW: NYC Health Dept has released addresses of 31 Upper East Side buildings with cooling towers that have tested positive for presence of Legionella bacteria, based on PCR screening.

Every building identified has been ordered to clean and disinfect its cooling tower immediately out of an abundance of caution, and remediation is expected to be completed for all buildings on the list by tomorrow, July 11.

Important to note: A positive PCR test result does not confirm that a building is the source of the current outbreak. PCR testing detects the presence of Legionella bacteria but cannot determine whether the bacteria are alive or dead. Only live Legionella bacteria can cause illness.

Health Dept is conducting culture testing on every cooling tower sampled. Those results take up to two weeks and will help investigators determine whether any of the cooling towers had live Legionella growing at the time the sample was taken.

As of last night, 46 people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease in connection with this cluster. 22 remain hospitalized. 19 have been discharged. Thankfully there have so far been no fatalities.

If you live, work, or have recently visited the area (zip codes 10028, 10128 & 10075) continue to monitor for flu-like symptoms, and contact a healthcare provider ASAP if any occur.
