The “six genders” line is fabricated; the real quote was “modern science recognizes more than two biological sexes, in fact there are six,” referring to intersex chromosomal variations like XXY, XYY, XO, and XXX. The “welcome mat” border quote is also clipped; the full line was “Our southern border should be like our front porch, there should be a giant welcome mat out front and a lock on the door,” and removing the “lock on the door” portion reverses the meaning. The “dismantle capitalism” claim is inaccurate; in a 2020 podcast he discussed confronting systems of oppression — white supremacy, patriarchy, economic exploitation — but did not call for dismantling capitalism, and opponents later stitched those concepts into a false quote. These viral interpretations combine unrelated remarks, remove context, and replace his actual words with exaggerated versions he did not say.

Kennedy and his family had substantial, personal connections to powerful Catholic figures in the US and in the Vatican—and critics did point to particular incidents, not just his baptism, to question his independence.

Pope Pius XII was a family friend. Cardinal Cushing of Boston was a close family friend.

Both did favors for the Kennedy family. Cushing helped establish a hospital commemorating Joe Kennedy Jr, who had been killed in WWII.

Pius XII had made Joseph Kennedy Sr a “papal duke”—an honorary title, but still. JFK himself had a private meeting with the pope at Castel Gandolfo while he was a US Senator.

And after JFK had withdrawn from a 1947 interfaith event in Philadelphia, the organizer said he had dropped out at the specific request of Cardinal Cushing. JFK denied it.

In Houston, after delivering his famous speech on religious liberty and the separation of church and state, Kennedy fielded questions from attendees. One demanded Kennedy get Vatican approval for the positions he had just outlined!

Abdul El-Sayed has repeatedly pledged allegiance to our Constituon and eloquently defended the principles of religious liberty that lie at the heart of our Founding and our democracy.

If you don’t have specific evidence undermining his declarations—evidence against El-Sayed *personally*, not his mom or sister or cousin—then you are trafficking in the same bigotry and smears the anti-Catholics of 1960 did.
