Very excited that the first application study (with @owenmweller) of our new thermodynamic model for alkaline silicate igneous rocks has just been published! We identify a key fractionation pressure to form Qz and Ne-bearing rocks, and look at implications for their REEs budgets.
Article: A narrow range of pressures at mid-crustal depth represents a tipping point between silica-undersaturated and -oversaturated compositions crystallizing from mafic melts in igneous systems

This summer, @cbeardgeo @CarrieSoderman @owenmweller headed to Greenland to investigate how #criticalmetals form in alkaline igneous rocks.
Look at the cool minerals they encountered: pegmatite veins containing amphiboles, feldspars and blood-red eudialyte. #igneous#petrology
It has been a superb week in #Assynt in the Northwest Highlands looking at some classic alkaline rocks and #Lewisian geology (and getting very wet feet). Thanks @owenmweller for organising!
Lavas reveal the life story of the Galápagos mantle plume. New research by our @CarrieSoderman, with @HelenWCam, @oshorttle & @simonwmatthews 🌋
Using Fe isotopes, they show how the ingredients making up the plume have changed over its lifetime.

A small fraction of recycled crust, possibly from the lower mantle, has consistently carried through the #Galapagos mantle plume for 90 million years, according to a new #geology study. https://t.co/Kf9NSGPioQ
My final thesis chapter has been published - a very satisfying conclusion to my PhD👇🏻🌋 We use Fe isotopes to look at lithological heterogeneity over the evolution of the Galápagos mantle plume 🌎
Thank you for this award @GeochemGroup👇🏻🌍 - this paper showcases some of the work that I’m most proud of from my PhD and I’m thrilled that others think it’s interesting too!
Ever wondered where the elements that make up your phone come from and what resources host them? Come check us out at the @NHM_London today!

Our new fellows were installed in a traditional ceremony in the college chapel last night. Welcome to Zeina Al Azmeh, Leo Impett, Ernesto Vargas Weil, Carrie Soderman, Arabella Milbank Robinson & honorary fellow David Dabydeen.
I suppose this is the time to share that I’ll be joining @Selwyn1882 as a research fellow in October! @stjohnscam has been a wonderful Cambridge home, and I’m grateful for my 8 years there, but I’m very excited to meet new colleagues and students at Selwyn 🌋🌎 #nearlypostdoclife
Term is just around the corner and as autumn beckons, you might be wondering what happened to a summer of fun research and conferences 🍂🏖️
On our blog: @Alasdair_Knight takes us to Hawaii for a reminder of July’s #Goldschmidt2022 conference.
